Pole Canyon Trail in 360 Degrees

Cascade Mountain Provo, Utah

If you drive up 800 N in Orem towards Provo Canyon there is this stunning view of Cascade Mountain that took my breath away.  When I drove up to Bridal Veil Falls a few weeks ago to do this post, I decided I must find out if there is a trail close to the Cascade Mountain SOON, and hike it.

So I pulled up my GAIA GPS app, and started looking, and I found there are lots of trails here!  It is called Pole Canyon and it is up Squaw Peak Road Provo Canyon.  The trail in April still had snow, and the trees had not started to have their beautiful green leaves bud, BUT because their was less foliage, the views of Cascade were not blocked, and the snow adds a beauty to that mountain by accentuating all the cool ridges.  I will definitely return to this area when it is green and do a good Google Earth Trail, BUT there are a few things that are needs to know about this hike.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT POLE CANYON SO YOU DON'T GET LOCKED IN.

OH NO!!!  WHAT DID YOU DO NOW SHAUNA!

As I planned my hike, the above was my planned route.  Of course you want to get as close to the trail head as possible and then hike.  I knew there was a gate here, and I knew it would probably be locked for the spring, but I knew no more.  When I saw the gate open, I thought COOL THEY OPENED IT UP EARLY!  We drove up to the trail and started hiking.  What we didn't know is that this is the  Archery club road.  They can't claim the whole mountain here and say NO TRESSPASSING, for their property to shoot is up the road a mile, but they control the Gate.  They have a small brown sign that starts Timp Archery Club 1 mile.  (I must admit I did not read further. )

So when we got done hiking we drove down, and the gate was LOCKED, and we were LOCKED IN.  Dang.....Luckily they have a number on the gate to call if you get locked in, but it doesn't work, and it says the Sheriff has a key, but they don't.  Basically it took us a very long time to get out.  If you go back and look at the map, you can see there are tons of trails working their way down from various parking areas along the road up further trying to get to this trail, since Timp Archers don't want to let others have access to this section of the mountain and share their road. Personally I think it is silly.  I think their gate should be in front of their property and we should have access to this first section of the road that is public owned.

In the end of Winter when spring is just tempting us saying it is around the corner this grand Mountain looks even more stunning with the snow accentuating the huge amounts of layers and cracks on this vertical fault line wonder, but it was a ray of hope seeing this bright yellow flower popping up.  I think this is the first one this spring on the trail.

LAKE MARY
This area was so much more amazing than I expected it to be.  I was just thrilled with how pretty it was, and am eager to get back up there again this year.  Absolutely LOVED this area.  I hear that on Saturdays it can get busy, so I would try and avoid the crowds and go anytime but Saturday Morning.
