I have started a brand new venture, and honestly, I am still trying to decide if it is totally crazy or absolutely brilliant! I love the concept of Slow TV—transporting people to a lovely place, usually at sunrise or sunset, to just hang out and enjoy the ambient sounds of nature.
But I wanted to add a visual anchor, something satisfying to watch instead of just a static landscape. My brilliant idea? Putting together complex 3D mechanical wooden puzzles in the wild! My very first project was the intricate FUNPOLA LED 3D Wood Puzzle Owl Post Office. I envisioned a quiet, unknown place with pristine audio. What I actually got was a hilarious masterclass in adapting to the absolute chaos of the great outdoors.
In a world that constantly demands our immediate, frantic attention, I felt a deep craving for stillness. I realized that so many people are stuck indoors—whether due to health, weather, or life circumstances—and they desperately need an escape valve. I wanted to create a digital sanctuary where the only requirement is to just *be*. Watching a puzzle come together piece by piece felt like the perfect metaphor: taking the chaotic fragments of our day and slowly, intentionally building something beautiful and orderly.

BLM Land & The Glowing Fish
We ended up on a dusty patch of BLM land south of Utah Lake because all my beautiful, pre-scouted locations suddenly had "No Trespassing" signs! Even though my plans to be out on Pelican Point didn't work out, I came well-prepared to make the rocky shoreline comfortable. I laid down a tarp, put a lightweight blow-up mattress on top, and covered it with a cozy sleeping bag and a fleece blanket. I even brought my gas firepit for ambiance... but realized too late that the propane tank I grabbed was completely empty! Silly me.
Surprisingly the first 30 min of building this puzzle are just building the tools you need for this build. It was kind of funny to realize I got through lots of steps, but hadn't started the puzzle yet. Soon though the gears start being a part of the build and to see all the gears interact and work together and have that anticipation that they are going to all work together to make magical things happen in this Owl Post office is so exciting. While I was laying on my sleeping bag painstakingly snapping together tiny wooden tools and base gears, Todd started fishing.
🦟 The Gnat Sabotage
I knew the gnats were bad, but I thought I had the camera low enough that I could just ignore them. I had NO CLUE that swarms of tiny flying insects would completely freak out the camera's sensor! The gnats literally destroyed the bitrate of my 8K footage, making the shots totally blocky. Out of 6 hours of recording, I only had 1 hour of usable footage. That was definitely a crazy thing to learn!
☢️ The Radioactive Catfish
Todd caught a white bass right off the bat, gave a big "Yipee!", and used it as bait. Ten minutes later, he had something on the line. But it wasn't pulling super hard, so he wondered, "Did I really catch a catfish?"
Imagine his huge surprise when he pulled it in and realized it was a strange, bright, almost glowing sunshine-yellow catfish! I wondered if it was radioactive from the summer algae blooms, but it was likely a super rare albino color morph. I tried to find an image of one like it online, but no luck! Usually, Todd takes big slabs of catfish, soaks them in milk to get rid of the fishy taste, and deep-fries them. But this 12-inch, radioactive-looking guy made me too nervous to eat, so back into the lake he went!
I have to admit, standing there in the fading twilight, holding this strange, glowing creature, felt surreal. We are used to the typical, murky grey catfish, but this guy looked like he had swallowed a glowstick! We debated taking him home, and Todd even mentioned his famous trick of soaking catfish in milk before deep-frying to remove the 'muddy' taste. But looking at that bright sunshine-yellow skin, I just couldn't do it. I felt like we had caught a little desert legend, and a legend belongs in the lake.

Todd's radioactive-looking sunshine-yellow catfish!
Despite the gnats and the mutant fish, connecting those first gears and seeing one turn make all the rest start moving was incredibly satisfying!

The Steampunk RAV4 Sanctuary
For Day 2, I chased Utah Lake State Park. I arrived fully dressed in my cool Steampunk vest and tall lace-up boots, planning to hang out on the beach and build.
The Owl Post Office has such a brilliant, vintage, mechanical vibe to it, and I wanted my outfit to perfectly match that aesthetic for the camera. I had envisioned looking like a rugged, Victorian inventor gracefully crafting a masterpiece on the sandy shores! Instead, I looked like a confused time-traveler hiding in a modern hatchback. But honestly, as the wind aggressively rattled the car windows, trading high-fashion for the squishy comfort of my Chacos was the best decision I made all day.
But the wind definitely had another plan for me!
Instead of getting derailed, I decided to invite the viewers into my cozy bed in the back of my RAV4. I popped the hatch, and it was so fun looking out at the mountains and the lake while building this adorable Owl Post Office.,
There was something undeniably comforting about that setup. Outside, the wind was relentlessly whipping the water into whitecaps and shaking the car, but inside, I was insulated. The smell of the old foam pad, the heavy wool blankets I had dragged from home, and the satisfying *snap* of the tiny wooden gears created a perfect little micro-climate of peace. It was a powerful reminder that we can't always control the storms raging outside, but we can absolutely curate the peace within our own sanctuary.
It was so nice to be out of the scorching heat, and wind and watch the clouds in the sky, the shadows drift across the mountains, enjoy the curious ducks that kept swimming by and checking me out. The surprise was the hug fish or fishs in the bay...they were HUGE here. They kept jumping really high out of the water, and it always took me by surprise with the huge splash they would make. This is also close to the Provo airport, so watching the huge planes come in to land was really something special. It is a little interesting as you look around this lake, fo you will realize it is surrounded by mountains. It is the center of kind of a circle of mountains. The 360 camera is funny that it really dwarfs things in the distance, so if you can image these mountains about 3 times bigger than they appear on the video, you will be a little closer to what this really feels like.
🎬 The Cinematic Chaos
The "Slow TV" audio I envisioned was a bit compromised. I had neighbors hanging out right by me swearing a lot! But the visual experience was amazing. My favorite thing was watching the cloud shadows move across the mountains, and hanging out until dark watching the city lights go on. There were constant HUGE fish jumping in the water, planes flying low into the airport, and ducks hanging out close by. It was a lovely evening! I was in my little sanctuary, and I was ok ignoring the rough out

Part 2: The Windstorm and Progress on Puzzle
Tarp on the Reeds
Day 3 was all about getting a view of snow-tipped Mount Timpanogos. Since all my other spots were shut down to the public, I opted to try my best on the muddy shores of Saratoga to capture the sunset in the southwest corner.
It was actually surprisingly comfortable! The layers of crushed reeds acted like a natural, spongy mattress beneath my tarp. Every time I shifted my weight to reach for a puzzle piece, the ground would let out a satisfying, dry crunch, creating a strange but rhythmic percussion track to my building process. The air smelled earthy and rich, a sharp contrast to the faint, smoky scent of the fresh, laser-cut wooden puzzle pieces resting on my lap.
The lake was so low it was pure mud, and the gnats were back! But I remembered my great friend @ela-travels showing me a village that thrives on an island made of reeds. I thought, "Why couldn't I cuddle up on my tarp on a soft ground of old reeds?"
It was unique and surprisingly lovely. We even had some fun clouds pull in and give us a little sprinkle for a while! The deep reds of the sunset were beautiful, and even though the pelicans didn't get close enough to capture, I made great progress on the puzzle.
Building on the muddy shores of Saratoga Springs.
Part 3: The Muddy Reeds
⛈️ The Stormy Star of the Show
Even though the mountains looked small, the storm clouds rolling in surprisingly became the star of the show! They were incredibly dramatic. The booming thunder had me a little stressed out, but I held my ground until the wind literally threatened to blow the tiny wooden puzzle pieces away.
Luckily, that didn't happen until sunset. We packed up and just hung out to watch the bright red colors explode across the sky. We even got a fun little sprinkle of rain, which added such a fresh, pleasant smell to the air that I truly enjoyed.
The Silver Lake Flat Finale
Day 4 was the epic finale at Silver Lake Flat. I arrived in the dark just as the sky was turning pink. It was a bit chilly, so I started a cozy fire, set up a spot to work, and finished the Owl puzzle with the constant companionship of some ducks and the amazing reflections on the lake.
I have to admit this video was my favorite of the 4. I loved the golden hour of the mountains here reflecting in the lake. I loved the smell of the real campfire, and the sounds of the crackling fire. The smooth the water made it a little quiet without much lapping of waves, but it made such lovely reflections. The ducks were so happy an content, and they were so used to my presence that they hung out quite close checking out what I was working on. I loved how fresh the air was up here in the mountains. The drive up here is quite the bumpy road, that tests your off road skills, but the reward of the lake all quite in the morning with the amazing mountains was so worth it.
In the quiet mirror of the morning lake, the peaks patiently catch the first light, reminding us that warmth always returns in gentle stages.
A calm mind, like still water, perfectly reflects the beauty around it after a dark night. In this morning stillness, let a piece of this tranquil dawn inspire you to write a kind card to a soul who needs your light.
Cradled in the safety of the morning, a gentle fire brings warmth to the shadows. As we slow down to build piece by piece, may this cozy sanctuary remind you to share your light with someone who crosses your mind today.
(And yes, I dumped bottle after bottle of water on that fire to make sure it was absolutely out before leaving. It was pretty much swimming in water! LOL)
Part 4: The Fire Finale
I am in a funny phase not quite knowing what to do with my VR Content. It is very complicated, but the short version is that it is very painful to create, and has such a low chance of reward or making money. It also really messes with the algorithm, and if the SlowTV Audience is my new family, then realizing that they will really struggle with the weird 360 video on a flat screen is a huge given. So for now... I am a little unsure what VR is like in my Future. Still I created this, and for those with a VR Headset, I think they will enjoy it.
The Gear Warning & Official Review
🦉 Shauna's Official Review: FUNPOLA Owl Post Office
Design & Joy Rating: 10/10! I had a smile from ear to ear this entire build. The workmanship and brilliance in creating this are just amazing. Seeing the cute prints and fun colors come alive brought me so much joy with each piece. Even creating the tiny books for the post office counter was fun! The cute 3D eyeballs on the owl, the gears moving to make the mailbox open and shut, the delivery boxes sliding along a track, the letter drop opening, and the owl wings flapping... there was so much fun attention to detail. I fell in love with it.
Beyond just looking cute, there is something deeply grounding about working with wood. You can smell the campfire-like scent of the laser-cut edges right out of the box. You feel the smooth grain under your fingertips as you meticulously rub wax onto the tiny gears to ensure they spin flawlessly. It engages all of your senses in a way that scrolling on a phone or watching TV simply can't.
Difficulty Level: Perfect. I like things challenging but not to the point of frustration. This was the perfect balance—a fun challenge that brought joy with every step.
Sturdiness & Instructions: The instructions were fantastic and very clear. The build itself is very sturdy... except for one specific spot, which leads me to my warning below!
⚙️ The Crucial Build Warning
If you are planning to build this yourself, I have a massive warning regarding the trickiest part of the build: placing the top floor onto the bottom floor.
It is hugely important to pay attention to the gear arrows being lined up. To their credit, the instructions actually had a big exclamation point about this! The problem? I enjoyed turning the gears on and off too many times while building to test them. By the time I went to attach the connecting bar from the bottom floor to the top floor, I wasn't sure if they were still in the correct alignment.
When you place the top floor on, you lose your visual of the gears. You can't see them anymore to know if everything is properly aligned, so it becomes guesswork! I thought I was going to be in trouble and not be able to get them to connect, but eventually, it came together nicely. It worked for a while, but then that darn connecting bar popped off! The more I tried to fix it, the worse it got, so my owl wings currently don't flap anymore.
I'm not sure if it was because I didn't have the arrows right, or because the bumpy dirt road ride back from Silver Lake Flat knocked it loose. My advice: Pay super close attention to anything connected to those bars connecting the gears to the top floor! Try to figure out a way to keep that bar from popping off before you seal it up.
