Shauna's Rating: 💎💎💎💎💎 (High Reward, Low Effort)
For months, people had been telling me, "You have to get to Colorado National Monument." When I finally did, I instantly understood why.
The moment you drive in, you are hit with a "wow" factor that is simply stunning. The cliffs are so massive and the views are so grand, it’s hard to believe this park isn't as world-famous as the Grand Canyon! But the best part? It’s a place filled with awe that doesn't require strenuous, grueling effort to enjoy. It is one of the most rewarding scenic drives you can take, offering maximum beauty with minimum physical exertion.

Rim Rock Drive & The Non-Hiker's Dream
Driving into the park is shockingly cool. I remember the ascent vividly—there is this climb where you are facing and driving right along the sheer edges. You can look straight down into the valley and see these huge cliffs dropping away. I definitely had those massive "WOW" awe moments looking off the edge from the passenger seat!
The experience here is very similar to other great "rim drives" like the Black Canyon of the Gunnison or Canyon de Chelly. You drive along the 23-mile Rim Rock Drive, pull over at designated spots, and take short, easy walks to incredible vistas. Because the cliffs are so massive, the road itself is a marvel of engineering, boasting three neat tunnels you actually drive through, the longest stretching 530 feet!
🗺️ The Ultimate Scenic Drive Loop
If you are someone who loves nature but isn't a huge hiker, this park is your paradise. In fact, you could build an incredible "Non-Hiker's Dream Loop" road trip!
Imagine connecting Colorado National Monument with the Black Canyon of the Gunnison in Colorado, heading south through the stunning drive-through dirt roads of Valley of the Gods and Monument Valley, and finishing at the rim overlooks of Canyon de Chelly in Arizona. It would be a phenomenal, highly-scenic route of maximum awe with minimum physical exertion!
🚲 The Tour of the Moon
This drive is so spectacular and challenging that it became famous in the cycling world! It was a major stage in the Coors International Bicycle Classic in the 1980s (which was featured in the movie American Flyers).
Cyclists called it the "Tour of the Moon" because the towering rock formations and desolate, rugged landscape felt entirely extraterrestrial. Today, they still hold an annual cycling event here honoring that legendary moniker.
The Golden Nugget 🌟
The Ease of Awe: Don't feel guilty if you don't want to hike! Unlike parks where you have to trek for miles to see the good stuff, the scenic drive is the main attraction here. It's the perfect adventure for a relaxed day, making it wonderfully accessible for all ages. Just keep a close eye on little ones near the unfenced cliff edges—and whatever you do, don't look down if you are afraid of heights!
Reading the Layer Cake
Colorado National Monument sits on the Northeast corner of the Colorado Plateau. This incredible geological feature extends into four states (Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico), creating a shape that looks just like a giant heart on the map.
Because it sits on the edge of this massive "lifting" of the earth's crust, the weathering and erosion have exposed millions of years of history.
🔬 Science Magic: The Three Layers
Geologists love this place because the earth's history is laid completely bare. When you look at these massive walls and the 450-foot-tall Independence Monument, you are actually looking at three distinct time periods stacked on top of each other:
- 🤍 Kayenta Formation (Top): The capstone! This is the white sandstone or lighter rocks you see resting on the very top of the pillars.
- 🟧 Wingate Formation (Middle): The dramatic, hard vertical cliffs that give the monument its iconic shape and fiery color.
- 🟤 Chinle Formation (Base): The sloping, softer foundation at the base of the vertical cliffs.
Mummies, Ruins & Canyon Echoes
As you drive through places like Artist Canyon, keep your eyes peeled. The beauty here is matched by a playful spirit if you know where to look and listen. During my spring visit, beautiful bright orange flowers were blooming everywhere, creating a gorgeous contrast against the red towers.
🏜️ The Mummy & The Ruins
Look up! The park advertises a rock formation that looks exactly like an Egyptian Mummy resting on the cliff wall. But that's not all—at one of the lookouts, there are mounted spyglasses. You definitely need to look through them! They are set up at the perfect angle to help you spot ancient Native American ruins tucked into the distant cliff walls!
🗣️ Todd's Test for Echo
"ECHO! ... Echo..." Todd loves to do the "Test for Echo" in big canyons. Often, the canyon is too vast and I can't pick the sound up on camera. But here? It is a very good echo! Because the opposite canyon wall isn't super far away, it bounces back pretty quick, and you can clearly hear it in the VR video!
☀️ The Heat & The Switchbacks
When we visited, it was hot and windy. The wind was actually a lifesaver to cool us off, but the heat was intense enough that Todd eventually tapped out of walking to some of the later viewpoints!
At the end of the loop, there is a trail with a neat zigzag of switchbacks heading all the way down into the canyon. I hung the VR camera over the edge to show it to you, but we decided to skip the hike itself. It felt way too hot to conquer that descent, knowing we'd have to climb all those steep switchbacks back up in the baking sun!
Hang Off the Edge with Me
I am going to hang you right off the edge of these massive cliffs. Are you ready? Put on your VR headset and transport yourself to this gorgeous monument for a mini-vacation!
🔎 VR Treasure Hunt
- Independence Monument: Can you find the iconic shot of the massive, freestanding tower?
- Through the Tunnel: Experience the feeling of driving right through one of the 500-foot tunnels carved out of solid rock.
- The Desert Bloom: Spot the beautiful orange flowers blooming against the red rock background.
- The Dizzying Drop: Look straight down when I hold the camera over the edge of the switchbacks!

Shauna's Survival Guide
- 📍 Location: Just outside of Grand Junction and Fruita, Colorado. Extremely easy to access from I-70!
- 🚗 Drive Time: Allocate 2 to 3 hours for Rim Rock Drive if you plan on stopping at the major overlooks (and you should!).
- 🐑 Wildlife: This is a fantastic place to spot desert bighorn sheep. They often hang out right near the road or scale the steep canyon walls. Drive slowly and keep your eyes peeled.
- 🚲 Share the Road: Remember the "Tour of the Moon"? Cyclists love this road. Be respectful, give them space, and watch blind corners.
The Layers of Our Lives
As I end this getaway, I would like to share the profound lesson I learned from nature here. This place is loved by geologists because so many of the layers of its history are laid bare to tell stories of brutal creations and beautiful hardships.
If you were given such an expansive view of the events that shaped the lives of those around you... would you find better empathy and love for them?
Why not try right now? Look at the people in your life and remember they have hidden layers of history, hardship, and triumph that shaped who they are today.
Remember to look up. The light is there to help you.
