Choose Your Adventure at the 3 Giant Spans

The Armchair Traveler Ritual

To truly transport yourself to this ancient, quiet corner of Utah: Brew a warm cup of herbal tea, dim the overhead lights, and imagine the massive weight and ancient presence of these stone bridges looming high above you.

⚡ The Quick Scoop

The Vibe: An ancient, quiet, and awe-inspiring park tucked away in the heart of Southeast Utah, featuring three massive natural stone bridges carved by water over millennia.

Accessibility: ♿ Outstanding! The park has paved, easily accessible overlooks for all three bridges for those with limited mobility. However, hiking down to the bases of the bridges involves steep stairs, uneven rock, and climbing down metal ladders.

Shauna's Tip: Don't try to conquer the strenuous 10-mile loop connecting all the bridges in a single day. Break it up and savor each one!

Natural Bridges National Monument is an absolute treasure, and what I love most about it is how perfectly it is designed to cater to every single visitor's skill level.

Whether you have limited mobility and simply want a short, stunning paved walk to a grand overlook, or you have a bit more energy for a beautiful hike down to the base of a massive bridge, or you possess the ambition for a strenuous 10-mile canyon loop, this park has an adventure waiting for you.

"They have done an awesome job in this park to try and cater to each person's skill level."

This is my ultimate guide to exploring the park's three incredible spans—Sipapu, Kachina, and Owachomo—and how you can choose the perfect journey for your own unique pace.

Chapter I

The 10-Mile Trap

The park is laid out beautifully with a one-way scenic drive connecting the trailheads for all three bridges. You can view them all from the top rim, or you can hike down into the canyon and connect them via an unmaintained, primitive 10-mile loop trail.

🎬 Reality Check: The Brutal Bottom

Don't feel pressured to do the full 10-mile loop in one day! We actually talked to some backpackers who had hiked the entire 10-mile loop through the base of the canyon. They were completely exhausted! They said the bottom of the canyon was mostly thick bushwhacking and honestly wasn't very pretty.

Meanwhile, hiking from the rim down to each bridge and back up is also incredibly strenuous—it is a brutal, constant up-and-down. After re-hiking this recently, we were so tired that we literally had to chop hikes off our itinerary for the next day! But here is the secret: the trails down to the bridges are absolutely gorgeous and some of my favorite hikes in the world. Just save your energy and do them individually!

Chapter II

A Tale of Three Bridges

Each of the three bridges here has its own distinct personality and trail style. Here is what to expect from each one.

1. Sipapu Bridge: The Adventurous Trail

Sipapu is the largest and most impressive of the three bridges, and its trail is an absolute adventure. It is SO fun! The steep hike down involves stairs, ledges, and ladders. In fact, as soon as I finished, I texted my sister and told her that even her kids (who sometimes complain on hikes) would REALLY love this one because it's such an engaging adventure.

Recently, the park replaced the old, rustic wooden ladders with sturdy metal ones. While they might be slightly less "picture-perfect" than the wood, they are incredibly safe. You can tell the park has really tried to add handrails and steps to make this challenging terrain a safe, fun experience for everyone.

2. Kachina Bridge: The Massive One

Kachina Bridge is incredibly thick and massive, showcasing the raw power of water over rock. Its trail is also steep and challenging, leading you down to the base where you can truly appreciate its immense, bulky scale.

🏜️ The Hidden Petroglyphs

On our most recent trip, we were incredibly surprised to find actual Native American petroglyphs right by Kachina Bridge! Keep your eyes peeled on the rock walls near the base. It was super neat and added a whole new layer of ancient history to the massive stone.

3. Owachomo Bridge: The Graceful Finale

Owachomo is the thinnest and oldest of the bridges, a delicate and graceful span of rock. Because it is older, the canyon around it has eroded away, making the hike to its base the shortest and easiest of the three. It is a perfect option for those with less time or energy who still want to experience standing under one of these giants.

Virtual Vacations: Owachomo

I recently revisited this park to capture the stunning beauty of Owachomo for my Slow TV collection! Put on a headset or expand these videos to stand right at the base of this ancient wonder.

🎥 Behind the Scenes: The Gimbal Dance

Filming a 3-hour 'Slow TV' video in a place like this is always a hilarious juggling act! It wasn't super busy because this park is such a hidden gem, but it was definitely warm out. Todd was working hard filming with his fancy gimbal, so my entire afternoon consisted of trying to decide: Should I be in the shot? Should I be filming my own shot? Or do I need to go hide behind a rock so my gear and I stay completely out of his shot? It is a constant, sweaty dance behind the scenes to capture that perfect, unbroken peace!

This video transports you right to the base of the delicate Owachomo Natural Bridge. It's a fantastic getaway for some Nature Therapy to boost those chemicals in your body that help you feel happier.
