My Quest for Stripes
My adventure began at the Toadstool Hoodoos, a fantastic trail right off the highway between Kanab, Utah, and Page, Arizona. It's a short, relatively flat hike through a wash that opens up into a playground of incredible rock formations. The "toadstools" themselves are amazing feats of balance, with hard cap rocks protecting the softer pedestals underneath, creating whimsical, striped shapes. Beyond the main area, the landscape unfolds into rolling hills of purple, red, and grey clay—the famous Chinle Formation—that look like a painter's palette. Later, while exploring the backroads of Northern Arizona, we found even more of these incredible painted earth patterns, where every hill and cutaway revealed another layer of stupendous stripes. It's a landscape that proves you don't always need a big, famous park to find incredible beauty.
Your Trail Guide: Helpful Hints
- ♦️ No Shade Alert: The Toadstools hike is completely exposed to the sun. Avoid hiking in the middle of the day during summer and bring plenty of water, no matter the season.
- ♦️ Follow the Wash: The trail to the Toadstools is mostly unmarked. Just follow the main wash from the parking lot, and you'll walk right into the main formation area.
- ♦️ Backroad Exploring: When exploring backroads, make sure you have a reliable vehicle, extra water, and a downloaded map, as cell service can be nonexistent. Be respectful of private property.
- ♦️ Fragile Environment: The clay hills and rock formations are very fragile. Please practice Leave No Trace principles, stay on established paths, and avoid climbing on the delicate features.

Conclusion
The world is full of natural art, and the painted deserts of Utah and Arizona are one of its grandest galleries. Chasing these stripes was a reminder that incredible beauty is often found in the smaller, quieter places, just waiting to be discovered. It’s a puzzle of geology and time that creates these stunning patterns, and I hope this immersive journey inspires you to go out and find some of the earth's stupendous stripes for yourself.
