Returning to My Roots

Escaping the Rat Race to Build High-Effort Slow TV Sanctuaries

⚡ The Quick Scoop

The Origin: I started my channel with a simple Google Sphere photo, driven by a profound desire to help those who couldn't travel—the elderly, those in wheelchairs—experience the world.

The Distraction: I got caught in the exhausting YouTube "Rat Race," trying to please a robotic algorithm that punishes unique, highly-creative VR storytelling and misunderstands the "Watch for Watch" culture.

The Resolution: Slow TV is not a default or a second choice. It is a highly-produced, intentional return to my roots. It is the realization that my highest creative efforts belong to the quiet audience I set out to serve in the first place.

My journey started simply enough: with a basic Pixel phone and a deep, burning desire to help those who could not travel. I wanted people whose bodies were aged, or confined to wheelchairs, to feel what it was like to stand in the middle of a beautiful forest and simply look around.

That spark ignited a massive fire. It led me to capturing Google Earth Trails, winning a trip to Google Headquarters, becoming an Oculus Launch program member, a Pico VR Ambassador, and a leader on the Oculus TV "Explore the USA" playlist.

I loved being creative. I loved weaving fun poetry, taking people on magical stories, and wearing crazy green-screen costumes. But somewhere along the way, trying to turn that passion into supplemental retirement income, I got caught in the YouTube algorithm—a puzzle that, for a highly unique VR creator, felt less like a game and more like a dungeon.

Chapter I

The Creator's Rat Race

To my fellow creators out there who are working themselves to the bone: I see you, and I know your exhaustion. Creating VR content is agonizingly hard. The file sizes are massive (you have to shoot in 8K just to survive YouTube's compression on headsets!), and trying to create highly-produced, magical stories takes endless hours.

But the hardest part is feeling like the harder you try to be unique, the more you are pushed down. I would pour my soul into a flagship video, only to have playlist curators change the rules: "No time-lapses. No green screens. No AI." They became super purists. And worse, YouTube stopped counting views from users who weren't logged in—which is almost everyone using a VR headset! Instantly, 70% of my hard-earned views vanished into the void.

📉 The "3 Green Arrows" & The Matchmaker

I fell into the trap of chasing the "3 Green Arrows" on YouTube Studio: High Views, High Click-Through Rate, and High Watch Time. To get there, I entered the brutal world of W4W (Watch for Watch).

I was the ultimate "Golden Rule girl," watching other people's videos in full, leaving genuine comments, and trying to support them. But here is the brutal truth I want to share to save other unique creators from this exhaustion: The YouTube Algorithm is a Matchmaker. And W4W completely breaks the matchmaking process.

If the algorithm senses that your views are coming from forced W4W exchanges, it kills the video dead. I felt like Sleeping Beauty, trapped in a glass sphere, trying to please a robotic money tree that kept moving the goalposts.

The Princess and the Robot Tree

The Princess and the Robot Tree

Upon a bed of velvet, through a sleep of many years,
Beauty woke quite suddenly—but not to cheers or tears.
She found herself encased within a floating, glass-like shell,
A shimmering, transparent sphere where only she could dwell.

Outside, the village hummed with life, a frantic, blurring race,
As people traded Stamps of Light at a breathtaking pace.
These stamps were lovely, gilded words, of hope and sweet support,
Designed to earn a Green Smile Boost within the Guardian’s court.

But then the ground began to shake, the leaves began to clink,
As the Guardian approached them, tall and made of metal-ink.
A Robot Money Tree was he, with branches stiff and cold,
Who decided who got "Green Smile Boosts" and who received the gold.

"You want my monthly coins?" he whirred, "You want my firm support?
Then stop these stamps! You’re moving to the Hill of Last Resort!"

I realized that trying to please this robotic Guardian through forced networking was keeping me trapped on a lonely hill, far away from the people I actually wanted to reach.

Chapter II

Finding the Secret Tunnel Out

While I was exhausting myself in the rat race, I looked at my analytics and noticed a profound, quiet truth. The people giving me the highest, deepest watch time weren't my W4W YouTube "friends." They were older people. They were people with disabilities. They were individuals watching on flat screens who desperately needed to escape their physical confines.

It was a massive "AHA!" moment. This was the group I had started this whole process for! All of this rat-race exhaustion was a distraction. I needed to shift gears, not as a second choice, but as an intentional return to my original purpose. I decided to make my first massive, 3-hour "Slow TV" video focused on the magical red rocks of Zion.

But to make it work, I had to do something that terrifies most YouTubers: I had to tell my old fast-paced audience to literally not click my new video. I sent this message out to my community to try and slip past the algorithm:

"Well hello! As many of you know, I have been working hard to find a 'peaceful window' for my channel that truly reflects my heart. Today, I am sharing a visual of my journey—escaping the 'castle walls' of the old ways to find the magical red rocks of Zion.

I have a very special request for this Thursday's 3-hour Zion release. If you are a 'Slow TV' fan who loves long, quiet, grounded and authentic nature, I can't wait to walk with you! However, if Slow TV isn't your favorite, I am actually asking you to help me by NOT clicking on this video. 🛑

To find my new 'Slow TV' neighborhood, the YouTube dragon needs to see that people who click are staying for the long haul. Don't worry, though! I haven't forgotten my friends who love the rat race energy or the VR goggles; new adventures are coming soon. Thank you for helping me slip through this secret tunnel out of my invisible box."

The Secret Tunnel

The Song of the Secret Tunnel

The castle walls were thick and high,
Where 'watch for watch' would dim the sky;
With iron chains and 'weird' old ways,
That kept the soul in a 'dungeon' haze.

But I have found a 'secret' door,
To find the peace I’m searching for;
Through tunnels deep and 'story-filled,'
Where 'rat race' noise is finally stilled.

The dragon waits with hungry eyes,
To snatch back every 'scenic' prize;
If you don't love the 'slow' and deep,
Please let this Zion 'sanctuary' sleep.

I’m breaking free, I’m stepping out,
To find what 'Slow TV' is about;
With 'measured footsteps' on the stone,
In a 'magical' world I’ve always known.

Chapter III

The Nature Fix & Virtual Vacations

I want to be very clear: Slow TV is not a "default second choice" for me. There is a lot of low-effort Slow TV out there on the internet, but that is not what VRGetaway is about. I transitioned because my audience didn't need me jump-cutting every 5 seconds. But to truly understand my "Why," we have to look at the science.

Years ago, when I first started this journey, I read a book called The Nature Fix. It profoundly struck me. It detailed extensive research from Asia demonstrating how nature is a literal source of healing for the body. The smells, the awe factor, the quiet journey—simply being in nature releases chemicals in the brain that are directly tied to happiness and stress reduction.

🧠 Tricking the Brain with VR

Shortly after, I read medical findings about Virtual Reality that completely blew my mind. Researchers were surprised to find that VR actually tricks the brain into feeling like it is truly there. It allows the brain to receive many of the exact same "Nature Fix" benefits—the drop in blood pressure, the release of happy chemicals—through a virtual experience!

This became my ultimate goal. I know that watching on a flat screen is a step away from a full VR headset, but I desperately wanted to give people that feeling of being along for the journey. My viewers don't have to be bored sitting in front of a static, unmoving camera pointing at the same lake for an hour to get recharged.

I want to take them away from their world—a world that may not be perfect right now—and give them the ultimate Virtual Vacation or Armchair Travel. I want it to be so panoramic, so immersive, that it feels like an actual scenic adventure of discovery. They step into the experience, find their awe, and leave their burdens at the door.

🌿 A Caregiver's Peace

I recently received a message from a caregiver that brought me to tears. They told me my videos had brought a profound calmness to their home. It finally stopped the relentless pacing associated with their loved one's dementia, allowing both of them to find patience, rest, and calm in the storm. This is why I do what I do.

🩺 My Prescription for Peace

When you step into one of my Virtual Vacations, here is my goal for you:

  • Take deeper, healing breaths.
  • Let your shoulders drop and your whole body relax.
  • Connect to the world above and find gratitude for the beauties of the earth.
  • Get out of the mindset that you are watching someone else's adventure. Believe in your soul that you are right there with us on the journey.
  • Visualize healing coming from above, choose Joy, and let it move you to feeling hope.
The Healing Heart

The Trail to the Healing Heart

The trail has shifted, the air has grown still,
I’m climbing a mountain, a new kind of hill.
For years I was caught in a box made of glass,
Watching the shadows and light as they pass.

But I’ve found a new map, a secret design,
To clear out the "noise" and make the light shine.
The Dragon who watches the gates of the stream,
Needs a pure signal to follow the dream.

So I’m building a sanctuary, wide and so deep,
For those who are weary, or looking for sleep.
A three-hour journey through ice and through stone,
To remind every soul they are never alone.

If you aren't a "Quiet Seeker," wait at the mountain's base,
I’ll meet you there tomorrow with a smile upon my face.
... Until our next getaway... Choose Joy. ✨

Chapter IV

The High-Effort Sanctuary: Colorado

If anyone thinks Slow TV is easy, they haven't tried filming my "Ultimate Slow TV Tour of Colorado: San Juans to Black Canyon." Keeping a 360 camera running continuously for 3 hours is an extreme juggling act!

⚙️ The "MacGyver" Reality

On my last shoot, I was simultaneously balancing the 360 camera, an immersive sound mic, and an umbrella to block the blinding sun—all while trying to hide the gear and act as a guide for the shots! LOL.

In the freezing Utah deserts, I literally have to sleep with my camera batteries cuddled up next to me in my sleeping bag to keep them from freezing overnight. In the sweltering heat, Todd has jerry-rigged a custom canopy just to keep the DJI gimbal from melting down, and I'm currently working on an army-strap harness for my umbrella. It is a gritty, unglamorous, behind-the-scenes reality required to capture that perfect, unbroken peace.

But when I finally stitched those massive files together and put the headset on... I cried. The stress of the YouTube rat race vanished, replaced by a profound, enveloping peace. The roaring white noise of the Black Canyon and the fluttering golden aspens felt like coming home.
