A Lesson on the Ledges: Hiking Utah's Unique Maple Canyon Loop

Alien Rocks, Handmade Stairs, and Gratitude

⚠️ Know Before You Go: Rolling Rocks & Steep Ledges

This trail's easy start can lead to overconfidence, but the steep sections are serious. Please read this carefully.

  • BE PREPARED: The trail is no joke. The unique "conglomerate" rock here means stones are lightly cemented together, making it incredibly easy to step on a rock only to have it roll right out from under you on an incline. Take hiking sticks!
  • NO CELL SERVICE: There is no service in the canyon. Getting a hurt person out would take a very long time. Do not hike this trail alone and be prepared.
  • BRING CASH: There is a fee for parking and recreating in the canyon, and you will need cash to pay at the self-service station.

⚡ The Quick Scoop

The Vibe: Rugged, challenging, and filled with incredibly bizarre and beautiful geology.

Must See: The world-class climbers attempting upside-down routes in the Pipe Dream cave, and the beautifully crafted log stairs!

The Inspiration: A profound lesson in humility, and deep gratitude for the people who take the time to "pave the way" for the rest of us.

Maple Canyon is a place that defies logic. The drive here takes you past the south end of massive Mount Nebo, through the beautiful Utah countryside filled with charming small towns and rows of turkey farms. Then, suddenly, the rolling valleys vanish and you are surrounded by cliffs that look almost alien.

It looks as if a giant grabbed handfuls of river rocks, mashed them together like playdough, and had a play day creating unique formations. This unique landscape is a world-famous destination for rock climbers, but it also holds an incredible hiking trail: the Maple Canyon Loop. This is the story of that hike, a journey that started with a bit of overconfidence and ended with a powerful lesson in gratitude.

Chapter I

The Arch & The Mountain Goat

The trail begins as a mellow stroll in the park, which completely lulled me into a false sense of security my first time here, so I left my hiking sticks in the car. The path up the Middle Fork to the beautiful conglomerate arch is not very far into the loop, and if you are just wanting a short hike, this is great!

I will warn you that it is steep and a little sketchy to get up to the arch itself. All the rocks here are just cemented together, which makes it incredibly easy to step on a stone and have it roll out from under you on an incline.

📖 Shauna's Journal: Four Limbs are Better Than Two

"The difference between when I hiked this loop without my sticks, and when I went with my sticks, was night and day. Having those poles completely relieved my stress. Instead of worrying about sliding on loose rocks, I felt like a mountain goat navigating the terrain with four limbs instead of just two!"

The loop is wonderfully marked. Just make sure to take this well-marked left turn back towards your car!

🌟 The Golden Nugget: Hike Clockwise!

Don't Miss This: Hike the loop CLOCKWISE. Start at the Middle Fork trailhead (the lower parking lot). This sends you up a gradual incline to the arch and the top of the loop. Crucially, this means you'll be going down the steepest section, where you'll find the amazing handmade stairs. It's much safer and more enjoyable than trying to scramble up that steep grade.

Chapter II

Gratitude on the Steps

After you make the turn to head back down, the trail becomes incredibly steep. I have to admit, the first time I came up here without sticks, I got very nervous thinking, "This is going to suck heading down." I was resigning myself to a clumsy descent, likely sliding on my bottom.

But as I rounded a corner, my dread turned to overwhelming relief and gratitude. There before me was a long, beautifully crafted set of handmade log stairs built right into the mountainside! Some thoughtful predecessor on this trail had taken a ton of time and care to come this far back and create this safe passage. It turned a terrifying descent into a lovely walk, and it was a profound reminder of the kindness of strangers.

Paving the Way

"May we be grateful for the many people in our history that have paved the way for us to have the luxuries we have... and may we not be lazy but search out truth so we can hold on to such blessings we have."

Chapter III

A Climber's Paradise

There is an amazing vista view on the way down, but I have to admit that I found it comical. The trail brings you right next to the upper parking area! I could have just driven right up to this view in my vehicle! LOL! But the hike itself is so epic, I am so glad I have done the full loop a few times.

The rest of the descent down the Right Fork is a spectacle of a different kind. The way down is a little funny because there are spur trails everywhere leading to world-famous rock climbing walls. On my first trip here, the canyon was packed with climbers from all over the world. I would wander down a spur trail, find a group, and then find another!

📖 Shauna's Journal: The Goal Mentality

"On my second trip, a storm was rolling in. The wind was rustling the trees and echoing off the canyon walls. I listened closely for voices and followed them down a spur trail, where I found two ladies tackling a challenging wall. It was so fun to film them and enjoy their camaraderie! At one point, one girl got completely worn out. She just hung there on the belay, resting and trying to decide if she had anything left in her to keep going or if she was totally done. They didn't quite make it to their ultimate goal that day, but they were so proud of the progress they made. I absolutely loved seeing that goal mentality in such a visual, physical way."

On that same pre-weekend trip, before the crowds arrived, I also followed the echoing voices to the famous Pipe Dream Cave. There, I sat with a man for a long time who was waiting and hoping for a buddy to belay him. Since I wasn't trained, we just chatted while we waited. With no luck finding a partner, he eventually headed back to the campground to arrange something for the next day. It was a delightful discovery of the community here. (And luckily, I made it out of the canyon just as the rain from that echoing storm started to fall!)

⭐ Final Thoughts

After surviving the rolling rocks and beating the storm, I stopped in one of the charming small towns on the way out for a well-deserved, yummy home-cooked meal. It was so fun to just sit, eat, and feel the vibe of the community. Listening to the "talk of the town" was such a refreshing change of pace from the usual urban city noise.

My hike in Maple Canyon was a beautiful surprise. I went expecting a simple walk and found an adventure that challenged my overconfidence and left me with a deep sense of gratitude. Those stairs, built with care by a predecessor on the trail, were a profound reminder of the kindness of strangers. From the alien geology to the vibrant climbing community, I hope you get a chance to experience the unique spirit of this canyon and feel that same sense of wonder and appreciation.
