A Lord of the Rings Adventure: A Guide to Maple Box Canyon

Navigating the Dark to Find the Light

⚠️ CRITICAL SAFETY WARNING

The waterfall at the end of the canyon has a rope hanging down it, and many people are tempted to climb it. DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS unless you are a highly experienced climber with your own proper gear.

The waterfall is mostly a trickle, which keeps the conglomerate river rocks constantly moist, mossy, and incredibly slippery. A slip here is catastrophic. My own brother-in-law tumbled down this steep waterfall and suffered a broken back and wrist.

Because there is NO cell service in this canyon, my sister had to wait in terror while other hikers ran out of the slot canyon and drove their car to find help. Please stay safe, be smart, and simply enjoy the beautiful waterfall from the bottom!

For your nature fix today, I have a journey into a place that feels like something straight out of Middle-earth: Maple Box Canyon.

This adventure was filmed before my green-screen storytelling days, but this location would have been absolutely perfect for a spooky, Lord of the Rings-style elven explorer costume! Even without the costumes, this canyon is carved from a unique conglomerate rock, made of medium-sized stones naturally cemented together. It’s a rare geological wonder that forms a crazy tall slot canyon, home to an arch, a waterfall, and a playground for rock climbers. The slot canyon itself is dark and daunting at times, with the bizarre sounds of crows and animals echoing strangely off the walls. You never quite know what is around the next corner.

It's a perfect metaphor for those dark and dreary places we sometimes find ourselves in life, and a powerful reminder that if you just keep moving forward, you'll always find the light. This is my guide to this fun, creepy, and beautiful adventure.

"The slot canyon feels like you have been transported to somewhere in Lord of the Rings. It is dark and has weird noises... totally fun in a creepy sort of way."
Chapter I

Into the Shadows

The hike into Maple Box Canyon is a fantastic, slightly spooky challenge. As you enter the tall, narrow walls made of that bizarre cemented river rock, the temperature drops and the light fades. The sounds of birds echo down from high above, making it feel like you are truly exploring uncharted territory.

Chapter II

The Bouldering Puzzle

It's a short 1.2-mile journey, but I give it a moderate difficulty rating due to the fun, technical obstacles along the way. This trail is definitely an obstacle course! There are at least three spots where you have to do some bouldering to get around huge rocks wedged deep in the slot canyon. Some you climb around, some you duck under, and one even has a rope to help you haul yourself past.

I distinctly remember climbing under one massive boulder, just hoping it didn't decide to collapse on me right then and there! To make matters worse, my backpack got wedged and stuck under the rock for a little longer than I wanted, triggering a moment of pure claustrophobia before I finally wriggled free. Despite that, I never felt like any of these bouldering spots were truly dangerous; they are just a really fun challenge that makes you feel accomplished when you conquer them!

Finding Your Path

Like most hikes, there are multiple paths through difficult obstacles in this canyon. Part of the fun is picking the route that is best for your ability. After dealing with so many stressful challenges, you eventually reach a lovely spot that feels like a green oasis.

Emerging from the dark, cramped spaces into that light, tranquil, and beautiful place is a profound feeling. It is so similar to life. Sometimes we are so stressed about a decision or a dark path we find ourselves on. But if we trust our inner spirit, make good choices, and just keep putting one foot in front of the other, things will be okay again. You will always eventually walk out of the dark and into a beautiful, tranquil place.

Chapter III

The Final Waterfall

At the very end of the creepy, wonderful slot canyon, you emerge to find a tall waterfall cascading down the slick conglomerate rock. It runs heavily during the spring runoff or a rainstorm, but normally it's just a trickle. However, that constant trickle keeps enough moisture coming down to make those rounded river rocks extremely mossy and dangerously slick.

As mentioned in the safety warning, please do not let the hanging rope tempt you into climbing it. Remembering the agonizing wait my sister endured while my brother-in-law lay in massive pain with a broken back and wrist is enough to keep my feet firmly planted on the ground. Just stand at the base, enjoy the cool air, and marvel at the light pouring down into the darkness from above.
