| The infamous Shafer Trail Switchbacks |
Buckle up friend, for today we are on a journey of a lifetime. There's a certain thrill that comes with a road labeled "dangerous." For a while, the Shafer Trail in Canyonlands National Park was on our "maybe one day" list. So when we heard it had been newly graded, we dropped everything. This post is the ultimate guide to the Shafer Canyon area, covering both the thrilling drive down the infamous switchbacks and the beautiful, short hike to the overlook that offers its own incredible views.
In This Adventure Guide:
🌟 The Golden Nugget: The Potash Ponds
Don't Miss This: After the dramatic descent and miles of dusty red desert landscapes, you turn a corner and see a body of water so vibrant you wonder what planet you are on. These are the Electric Blue Potash Ponds.
Why is it Blue? (The Science): That crazy color isn't natural—but it is science! Potash (potassium chloride) is mined here by pumping river water underground to dissolve the salt, then pumping the brine back to the surface. They add a deep blue dye to the water to help it absorb more heat from the sun, speeding up evaporation. As the water evaporates, the crystals are left behind. The gradient of colors you see—from deep cobalt to pale turquoise—represents different stages of evaporation in each pool!
TRANSPORT YOURSELF TO SHAFER CANYON
We were there during the Jeep Safari, so the energy in the air was electric! Grab your headset to feel the drop-offs without the danger.

🥾 My Shafer Trail Story
This adventure started out like many of ours do... with a totally different plan. Yet when a great opportunity presents itself, we are flexible enough to jump on it! Finding out the Shafer Trail had just been graded was a huge find, and it didn't take much to convince Todd to brave the journey.
White Knuckles on the Edge
This may be an adventure drive for Todd, who is usually safe on the inside of the road, but for me? I was on the precipice! I wasn't only on the very edge looking down into a chasm, but I was also hanging a camera out the window to capture the drop! It was a little... no, a lot nerve-wracking.
The sound of gravel on the road and the rocks crunching under the weight of the tires made it all too real. Remember, this road was meant for Jeeps, not a huge Ford Expedition! We were definitely wider than this track was meant for. I have had enough crazy off-road experiences with Todd to trust him completely, but even with him constantly using engine braking and overdrive, we could smell hot brakes by the time we reached the bottom. We actually had to pull over to let them cool down!
Into a "Utah Petra"
As we drove further into this foreign landscape, it felt like we had entered a "Utah Petra." The walls towered over us, ancient and imposing.
We found a pull-off and stopped, curious why it was there. We thought it was just to admire the cliff walls, but we took a few steps and suddenly the ground dropped away again. There, winding through the canyon, was the river making a horseshoe bend. We have chased the river all over Utah, but seeing this glimpse of emerald green in the depths of the canyon was a real treat.
Further on, we passed a mound that looked exactly like the rock tower from Close Encounters of the Third Kind. It really does feel like you are on another planet down here.
The KING of Balanced Rocks
As we continued, Todd started looking for a specific landmark he remembered. He built it up so much I was worried it might have fallen over! But then we saw it. We have seen tons of balanced rocks, but this is the KING of Balanced Rocks.
It is HUGE and miraculously balanced on a tiny, tiny base. If that isn't crazy enough, the rock is not symmetrical—it has one side sticking out much wider than the other side! It defies gravity in a way that makes you hold your breath just looking at it.
The Jeep Safari & The Beast
We happened to be there during the Jeep Safari, and watching that amazing train of jeeps come by was really fun. The air changes with excitement, and the rumble of dozens of jeeps making a long train into the canyon is quite the sight.
We sat and visited with the crowd, feeling the camaraderie of conquering the Shafer Trail together... even if we didn't quite fit in. Our vehicle is definitely not a jeep, and we once again got those funny looks of, "You got *that beast* down here?"
Why Conquering This Road Matters
Why does it matter that we drove this crazy road? Because we have stood on the cliffs of "Island in the Sky" so many times, looking down into this valley, wondering about the bizarre and interesting shapes far below. To finally be down here, among the giants we used to look down on, changed my entire perspective of the park.
💡 Your Trail Guide: Helpful Hints
- ♦️ Check Conditions First: This road is impassable when wet. The clay turns to grease. Always check the road status on the official Canyonlands National Park website before you even consider driving it.
- ♦️ Vehicle Requirements: A high-clearance 4x4 vehicle is required. Do not attempt this in a standard passenger car. Low gear is your friend!
- ♦️ It's a Two-Way Street: Remember that UPHILL traffic has the right of way. Be prepared to navigate tight passes and yield appropriately.
- ♦️ Love Switchbacks? Try These:
- Moki Dugway: Near Valley of the Gods (Hair-raising!).
- Mineral Bottom Road: Just past Dead Horse Point (Watch for BASE jumpers!).
- Burr Trail Road: Descends into Capitol Reef (Epic views).
🎒 What's in My Pack?
Since this is a driving adventure in a remote area, your "pack" is your vehicle!
- Offline Maps: There is ZERO cell service in the canyon. Download Google Maps or AllTrails before you leave Moab.
- Plenty of Water: It gets hot in the canyon bottom and help is far away.
- A Spare Tire: Sharp rocks are common. Make sure your spare is fully inflated and you know how to change it!
🔎 VR Video Treasure Hunt!
When you watch the immersive 360° video, see if you can find these special moments!
- Jeep Safari: Can you spot some of the cool, modified Jeeps navigating the trail alongside us?
- The Edge: Find the shot that best captures just how narrow the road is and how steep the drop-off is!
- The Balanced Rock: Look for the massive balanced rock formation that stands guard along the lower part of the trail.
- Blue Pools: Can you see the incredible, vibrant blue of the Potash Ponds near the end of our drive?
Don't Forget the Overlook Hike!
Before or after your drive, don't miss the second draw to this area: the sweet and simple hike to the Shafer Canyon Overlook. This is one of the first viewpoints in the Island in the Sky district and it gives you a fantastic feeling for the immense scale of the landscape. I captured a few 360 videos from the trail for you to experience this gorgeous, easy walk.

- Moki Dugway: Located near Valley of the Gods.
- Mineral Bottom Road: Just past Dead Horse Point, this road descends to the Mineral Bottom boat ramp. You can see old cars that didn't make the drive left in the rubble, and if you go around Thanksgiving, you might see BASE jumpers!
- Burr Trail Road: Look for the switchbacks as this road descends into Capitol Reef National Park down on the edge of the reef.
The Shafer Trail is more than just a road; it's a rite of passage for many Moab adventurers. It's a test of nerve that rewards you with access to a world you can't see from the overlooks above. From the engineering marvel of the switchbacks to the serene beauty of the river valley and the surreal colors of the potash farms, this drive is an adventure from top to bottom. It's a journey we were so thrilled to finally take, and I hope this immersive video gives you a taste of the thrill!
⭐ Final Thoughts
As I end this VR getaway, I would like to share the lesson I learned from nature today.
Todd is great about making sure we are super prepared and learns all he can about the road before we go. His preparedness—and my trust in him—makes it so that I'm not fearful in a moment where it would be so easy to be terrified.
May we all find ways to prepare in our lives so we can live without fear. And remember to look up—the light is there to help if you just ask.
Sending Love,
Shauna from VRGetaways
