The Armchair Traveler Ritual
Before we brave this cliffside descent, set the scene: Roll down the windows, imagine the distinct smell of hot brakes and red dust, and get ready for a white-knuckle ride into the canyon below!

To truly capture the epic, terrifying scale of descending a massive cliff face, I highly recommend opening a new tab and playing "Legionnaire" by Scott Buckley right here in the background while you read and explore the 360° tour!
⚡ The Quick Scoop
The Vibe: A slow, heart-pounding descent down an iconic, unpaved road carved directly into the sheer cliff walls of Canyonlands National Park.
The Reality Check: The road itself isn't technically hard to drive... until you look over the edge! You absolutely must yield to uphill traffic, which means finding pull-offs quickly!
Must See: The gravity-defying "King of Balanced Rocks" and the bizarrely vibrant Electric Blue Potash Ponds at the end.
Shauna's Rating: 💎💎💎💎💎 (An epic 5 out of 5 Diamonds for the thrill!)
Buckle up friend, for today we are on a journey of a lifetime. There's a certain undeniable thrill that comes with traversing a road officially labeled "dangerous."
For a long while, the Shafer Trail in Canyonlands National Park was just sitting on our "maybe one day" list. So, when we heard through the grapevine that the notoriously rough switchbacks had been newly graded, we dropped everything. This post is the ultimate guide to the Shafer Canyon area, covering the thrilling drive down the infamous cliffside and the unexpected treasures we found at the bottom.

White Knuckles on the Edge
This may be an adventure drive for Todd, who is usually safely hugging the inside of the road, but for me in the passenger seat? I was right on the precipice! I wasn't only on the very edge looking down into an endless chasm, but I was also hanging a heavy 360 camera out the window to capture the drop!
😰 The Panic and The Grin
Honestly, it doesn't feel super stressful at first if the road is newly graded... UNTIL you look over the edge, and then you are like, "We are crazy!" The sound of gravel sliding and rocks crunching under the weight of the tires made it all too real.
Then, the real terror hits: seeing a car coming UP while you are going DOWN. You are instantly like, "This is NOT GOOD!" You definitely have to find a tight corner to tuck into so another vehicle can pass. The trick is making sure you see them before you have to back up... because backing up on this cliff would be bad! While I was getting incredibly nervous, I looked over at Todd, and he just had the biggest, happiest grin on his face. He was in his element!
Even with Todd constantly using engine braking and overdrive to spare the brakes, we could smell them burning hot by the time we reached the bottom of the switchbacks. We actually had to pull over to let them cool down!
The "Family Mobile" vs. The Safari
As we drove further into this foreign, dusty landscape, it felt like we had entered a "Utah Petra." The canyon walls towered over us, ancient and imposing. We happened to be there during the famous Moab Jeep Safari, so the energy in the air was electric. Watching that amazing train of highly-modified, lifted Jeeps come by with their rumbling engines was really fun.
🚙 ORVilla Defends Her Honor
We sat and visited with the crowd, feeling the camaraderie of conquering the Shafer Trail together... even if we didn't exactly fit in. Remember, this road was historically carved out for uranium miners and is heavily promoted for Jeeps—not a massive, wide Ford Expedition!
As the huge parade of off-roaders passed us, I am sure many were looking at us thinking, "We paid huge money to be a part of this exclusive Jeep Safari, and you are coming down in a Family mobile?!" LOL!
Let me just set the record straight right now: ORVilla is definitely not treated like a typical family mobile! She is our Off Road Villa! She earned her stripes on that trail, even if we were definitely wider than the track was originally meant for.
The King of Balanced Rocks
As we continued bumping along the valley floor, Todd started looking for a specific landmark he remembered from years ago. He built it up so much that the anticipation was killing me. He kept saying, "Is it still there?"
🪨 The Gravity-Defying Giant
After miles of driving, Todd had basically given up. He said, "I think it fell over. So sad, I really wanted to show it to you for it is so crazy!"
I was so bummed. But then, we turned the next corner, and BAM! There it was, still standing, and way more impressive than I could have ever imagined!
We have seen tons of balanced rocks in Utah, but this is undeniably the KING of Balanced Rocks. It is so enormous, yet perched on such a tiny, fragile base. What makes it even crazier is that it's completely asymmetrical—one side sticks out way further than the other! You can't pull your car under it, but we definitely got out, walked under it, and walked all the way around it. It defies gravity in a way that makes you hold your breath just looking at it.
The Golden Nugget: The Electric Blue Ponds
After the dramatic descent and miles of dusty, rusty red desert landscapes, you turn a corner near the end of the trail and see a body of water so vibrantly blue you wonder if you've landed on another planet. These are the famous Electric Blue Potash Ponds.
🧪 The Science Behind the Color
That crazy neon blue color isn't natural—but it is brilliant science! Potash (potassium chloride) is mined here by pumping river water underground to dissolve the ancient salt layers, then pumping the resulting brine back up to the surface ponds.
They intentionally add a deep, food-safe blue dye to the water. Why? Because dark blue absorbs more heat from the desert sun than clear water, which drastically speeds up the evaporation process! As the water evaporates, the valuable salt crystals are left behind. The incredible gradient of colors you see—from deep cobalt blue to pale turquoise and bright white—represents the different stages of evaporation in each pool!
Shauna's Blessing: Trust the Pro
Why does it matter that we drove this crazy road? Because we have stood on the cliffs of "Island in the Sky" so many times, looking down into this valley, wondering about the bizarre shapes far below. To finally be down here, looking back up at the giants we used to look down on, changed my entire perspective.
✨ Navigating the Switchbacks of Life
I may have been scared for a moment on that cliff edge, but then I looked over at Todd. I realized: Todd is so much of a worrier, yet he has taken me through crazier situations like an absolute pro, and I knew he would get us safely through this one.
That is the exact same kind of trust I have in Above Help. Sometimes I hit a trial and think, "This is so hard, I don't know how I can deal with this." But then I remember all the times I have had help, guidance, and inspiration navigating a massive obstacle in the past. I have to step back and say, "Silly Shauna, pray, trust, and follow that inspiration and it will all be ok." I believe that with my whole soul! May we all find the courage to trust the ultimate Pro when life's switchbacks get terrifying.

🎒 Helpful Hints & Safety Rules
- Check Conditions First: This road is officially impassable when wet. The clay turns to slippery grease. Always check the road status on the official Canyonlands National Park website before attempting it.
- Vehicle Requirements: A high-clearance 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended. Do not attempt this in a standard, low-clearance passenger car. Low gear is your best friend for saving your brakes!
- It's a Two-Way Street: Remember that UPHILL traffic has the right of way. You must be prepared to scan ahead, navigate tight passes, and yield appropriately by tucking into the small turn-outs.
- Offline Maps: There is absolutely zero cell service in the canyon bottom. Download Google Maps or Gaia GPS before you leave the city of Moab!
