Shauna's Rating: 💎💎💎💎 (A perfect, easy 4-Diamond adventure!)
Sometimes the most spectacular nature escapes are hiding right in our own backyards. Rocky Mouth Falls is a super short, 0.9-mile round trip hike in Sandy, Utah, that leads to a beautiful waterfall tucked back into a gorgeous rocky cove.
Because it is so short and easy, it is the absolute perfect family-friendly hike, and it pairs beautifully with nearby adventures like Lisa Falls. But don't let its short length fool you—this trail is packed with unique quirks, fun caves, and some pretty intense rock climbing action!

The 10 PM Gate & The Neighborhood Stairs
The start of this trail is completely unique! You park in a designated lot right off Wasatch Blvd, but you have to be careful. The parking lot has a gate that automatically closes and locks at 10:00 PM sharp. You absolutely must get your car out of there before then!
🛻 The Mangled Truck
I am not kidding about taking that gate seriously. I actually watched a guy in a truck who didn't see the gate coming down, and it completely munched up the back end of his vehicle! He just looked so incredibly disappointed. You could tell he had just enjoyed a lovely nature escape, maybe wishing the hike was a little longer, and then suddenly having to deal with an auto collision completely drained all the joy out of his evening. Pay attention to the signs and the time!
Once you are safely parked, the trail takes you up a nice set of natural-feeling wooden stairs. But then, as soon as you reach the top of the stairs, you are suddenly standing right in the middle of a residential neighborhood! You literally look around like, "Wait, what just happened?!"
Luckily, it isn't like Ferguson Canyon where you have to hike up a hot, paved road forever. You are back onto the actual dirt trail very soon! You walk along the suburban sidewalk right past people out watering their yards. I definitely noticed the neighbors weren't super friendly, but honestly, I completely understand. I am sure it is quite annoying having a constant stream of foot traffic walking right past your front window every single day! Still, it is so funny to think these gorgeous neighborhood houses have a massive waterfall hiding right in their backyard.
Caves & Waterfall Rappellers
Once you hit the dirt trail, it is a beautiful, easy walk. I saw several young Boy Scout troops hiking this, and it was so cute watching them enjoy the wonder and magic of the area. It is a fantastic trail for all ages.
Along the way, the trail is dotted with cool rock formations, bright green moss, and fun little caves. They are more like cute little alcoves than true, deep caves, but they are such an unexpected bonus! Stepping into the alcoves, you instantly feel the air get cooler. In fact, because the area is so well shaded, once you turn the corner into this canyon, it feels like the temperature instantly drops a refreshing 5 degrees!
⚙️ A Steampunk Inspiration
Standing in this cool, shaded, mossy alcove, my creative gears started turning! When I was plotting out a magical Steampunk green-screen video idea recently, this exact area came to mind. It felt like the absolute perfect backdrop for a time-traveling Steampunk adventure!
🧗♂️ Dropping Through the Water
When you finally reach the rocky cove at the end, the waterfall is stunning. But the most entertaining part? This is a highly popular spot for rock climbers! However, they don't just climb the rocks on the side... they actually rope-climb and rappel right down the middle of the waterfall!
The rappellers were getting absolutely soaked. I don't think they were yelling, but because the cove is such a tight, small space, their voices echoed and made it feel much louder. I didn't have to dodge them because I was huddled out of the splash zone trying desperately to keep my 360 camera dry! They were definitely prominent in my shots, and I stood there debating: Did these bright, dripping wet climbers just make my shot less cool, or infinitely cooler?!
The Nature Fix Parable
A while ago, I was reading a book called The Nature Fix. It goes over dozens of scientific studies that prove getting out into nature is physically and mentally healing. They found that hitting a trail—especially one that has a "WOW" factor like a waterfall—boosts your immune system by astonishing amounts, increases creativity, and has massive healing effects for those dealing with depression.
🌟 Building a Positive Relationship
I would absolutely add one more massive benefit to that list: Nature builds a positive relationship with the Man upstairs. You simply cannot look at these gorgeous creations—the rushing water, the vibrant green moss, the towering caves—and not know that there really is a God.
Hopefully, we can all go past just enjoying the view, and truly feel humbled by His greatness and deeply grateful for the beautiful world He created for us to explore. This hike is great, it's fast, and anyone can do it. Get out and get your Nature Fix today!

🎒 What's in My Pack? The TimBuk2 Pouch
Years ago, I bought a TimBuk2 Cell Phone pouch that grips right onto my backpack strap. It is probably my most favorite hiking accessory! I love that my cell phone is so easy to grab for quick photos, and then stash safely away so my hands are free for my hiking poles. If you love taking trail photos, you absolutely need one!
