The Grand Tetons

A Tale of Two Seasons (And a Little Bit of Magic)

⚡ The Quick Scoop

The Vibe: A majestic mountain range that tells two completely different stories. You'll experience the classic, glassy-blue reflections of summer, and the frosty, golden, fairy-tale mist of autumn.

The Magic: Why do I film these places in 360 VR? Because this place is impossible to understand in a cropped shot. You can't experience the grandness of the mountains without the pairing of the lake, and vice versa!

Shauna's Rating: 💎💎💎💎💎 (5 out of 5 Diamonds for absolute scenic perfection!)

What if a mountain range could tell two completely different stories? You come to a place like the Grand Tetons expecting the classic postcard view—the jagged peaks reflecting perfectly in the blue water. And I found that. But when I returned later in the year, I found something else entirely.

I found a world of golden mist, playful sprites, and a silence so deep it felt like a secret. The Royal Gem of the Rockies, sculpted by glaciers and shaped by earthquakes, is a testament to the raw power of nature. But it's not just the physical beauty that draws us in; it is the magic that lingers in the air. This isn't just a travel guide; it's a tale of two seasons, and an invitation to find your own magic in the shadow of the peaks.

Chapter I

Summer Serenity: The Blue Mirror

My first big trip to the Tetons was actually a solo adventure. My main goal had been exploring Wyoming, but I found myself with a few extra days and decided to head toward the peaks. Standing in front of those massive, jagged peaks definitely made me feel small, but the entire trip was just filled with such awe and wonder.

I honestly spent the whole morning at Taggart Lake in awe. The temperature was perfect, the lake was glassy smooth, and the reflections were incredibly vibrant. The fields of wild lupines blooming along the path were charming, adding brilliant pops of purple color to the green and gray landscape.

✈️ The "Backside" Illusion

The funny thing about this trip is I tried to drive around to get a view of the "backside" of the Tetons to blow people away with a secret view. Spoiler alert: there is no view of the Tetons when you try to come from the backside! LOL. I should have known better, because years ago, Todd and I paid for a plane ride over the Tetons. It was incredible to see from above that the mountains aren't just lined up in a nice, thin row. They are a massive, deep network of peaks, alpine lakes (many frozen most of the year), and glaciers tucked into the high corners.

📸 The Photographer's Playground

The main trail is lovely, but what I found most special was that every few feet there seemed to be a cute spur trail leading to another incredible view. Because so many photographers come here, the trails to their "secret places" are easy to follow and lead you to picture-perfect locations.

It was impossible to take a bad photo; the pairing of the amazing lake with the Teton mountains rising dramatically behind it is a sight that stays with you forever.

Chapter II

Autumn Magic: The Golden Mist

My return trip in the fall happened by pure luck! It was my Fall Break, and Todd and I had originally planned on traveling south to the desert for sunshine. But as the break got closer, the entire south was dealing with a tough storm. I thought, Huh, I wonder if there is a crazy chance that up north in Wyoming we could miss this storm? Sure enough, the forecast was clear. Fall break was saved by funny, random chance!

While summer was about warmth and flowers, fall had a totally different texture. Yes, the water was freezing cold! There was heavy moisture in the air and literal frost on the bridges, but there was also an incredibly relaxed, quiet feeling.

🐾 "Wet Bum" & The Thieving Fox

We had some hilarious encounters on this trip. First, while sitting on the beach getting a timelapse, a boat floated by with a dad and son. Todd, being his friendly, humorous self, struck up a conversation. They told us their boat had taken on some water and their bottoms were freezing cold—which is why Todd affectionately dubbed the dad "Wet Bum"! Later, we actually saw two adorable Pine Martens! They darted just five feet in front of me, leaving me frantically trying to get my camera on them.

But the craziest encounter was with a fox after sunset at Jenny Lake. It was getting dark, so I set my 360 camera and tripod on the ground behind me while I unloaded ORVilla (our trusty van). I turned around, and the fox had crept right up to it! Foxes are notorious thieves, and he was definitely curious enough to try and take my camera home! LOL. I quickly grabbed it and hopped back into ORVilla—startled, but totally amazed.

Chapter III

Misty & Flutter's Magical Journey

We woke up early and went out to Jenny Lake for sunrise. This was easily my coldest moment in the Tetons! There was thick ice on the bridge, and my hands were so freezing cold walking the shores to capture the sunrise. But the golden mist rising up from the freezing water felt like it was alive. It inspired a whimsical story about "Misty" (the mist sprite) and "Flutter" (the leaf fairy) trying to save the season's magic before the winter froze them out.

Rising high into the sky an ancient Glacier says, "Hello,"
"And a pleasure to meet another with such a lovely flow.
Though I've shaped this land, the warning I impart:
Warm too long and you'll vanish from the light."

Fear grips Misty, a chilling icy fright.
Will the warmth really take her away from this Gem?
But not far distant a leaf flutters on a stem.

In the distance she hears a desperate, heart-haunting cry,
Of Misty pleading, "Help me not to say goodbye."
Flutter hears the plea, her heart with sorrow fills.
She breaks free from the stem, defying Nature's Wills.
With wings outstretched, she soars toward the sky.
A Beacon of Hope, a chance for Misty to fly.

Chapter IV

The Golden Nugget: Mormon Row

If there is one thing you absolutely cannot miss, it is Mormon Row at sunrise. I have been to this historic collection of homesteads three times, and each time was completely different, but always memorable!

✨ Three Epic Sunrises

The Buffalo Siege: My first time here was with a photographer chasing the classic Ansel Adams shot. We wandered into an old barn to check it out, completely unaware that a massive herd of buffalo had decided Mormon Row was the perfect place to hang out. They surrounded the backside of the barn while we were inside! It was incredibly stressful being trapped in the middle of a buffalo herd, praying they wouldn't be tempted to wander indoors!

The Solo Crowds: My second trip was solo. I was a little surprised by how many people show up in the freezing dark. Honestly, it's almost as entertaining to set up a 360 camera and watch the massive crowd grow as it is to watch the sky turn pink and the barn glow golden!

The Crunchy Leaves: My last trip was in the fall with Todd. We arrived a little later because we were distracted by nearby Lower Slide Lake (created by a massive landslide!). The Tetons had fresh snow-tips, and the ground around the barn was covered in perfectly crunchy leaves. It was pure magic to walk through.

Transport Yourself

360° VR & Video Tours

I've created two versions of this story: a peaceful summer meditation and a whimsical autumn fairy tale. Grab your headset for the 360° video if you have one—it's the only way to look up at the mountains and down at the lake at the same time!

Autumn Magic: A Whimsical Fairy Tale (VR 360)

Join Misty and Flutter as they explore the golden leaves, say hello to majestic moose, and watch the shadows chase the peaks.

🎒 Helpful Hints for Your Visit

  • Best Time to Visit: Go in Summer for hiking and lake access (warm days, cool nights). Go in Late September for peak fall foliage, golden mist, and fewer crowds.
  • Drive the Loop: Don't just stay in one spot! Drive the Teton Park Road loop. I drove from Palisades to Jackson and found that this loop offers dozens of incredible pull-offs.
  • Wildlife Watch: This loop is your best bet for spotting herds of bison, majestic moose, and elk, especially during the "golden hours" of morning and evening. (Please keep a safe distance!)
Be Prepared

What's in My Pack?

For the Tetons, you need to be prepared for rapid weather changes and wild encounters!

🐻

Bear Spray

You are in serious grizzly country! Keep it accessible (on your belt or chest strap, NOT buried inside your pack).

🧥

Puffer & Fleece Layers

Even in summer, the mornings at Mormon Row are freezing cold. In the fall, the frost on the bridges is very real!

📷

Circular Polarizer

If you are taking photos of Taggart Lake, this lens filter helps cut the glare so you can capture those perfect mountain reflections.
