The Grand Tetons: A Tale of Two Seasons
Grand Tetons Taggart Lake

The Grand Teton National Park is a place of undeniable magic, and I've been lucky enough to experience its beauty in two very different seasons. My first trip was a classic summer adventure, a serene hike to the pristine Taggart Lake, capturing the perfect reflections that make the Tetons so iconic. My second visit was a whimsical journey through the golden hues of autumn, a creative exploration complete with fall leaf fairies. This post is a combination of both of those trips—a tale of two seasons, two different styles of video, and a comprehensive guide to help you find your own magic in this incredible place.

The Golden Nugget 🌟

Don't Miss This: Mormon Row at sunrise. This is the classic, can't-miss Teton experience. The collection of old barns, made famous by photographers like Ansel Adams, provides the perfect foreground as the morning sun lights up the jagged peaks. It's a truly spiritual moment for any photographer or nature lover.

My Grand Teton Stories

Summer: The Classic Hike to Taggart Lake

My first big trip to the Tetons was focused on capturing that classic, majestic beauty. The hike to Taggart Lake is perfect for this. It's an easy, accessible trail for all ages that delivers enormous rewards. The path leads you through beautiful forests and opens up to the stunning lake, with the Teton peaks rising dramatically behind it. What's great is that so many photographers have come here that the "secret" spots for the best photos have well-worn side trails, making it easy to find your own picture-perfect location.

Fall: A Whimsical Journey with Fairies

My more recent trip was a different kind of creative challenge. I wanted to capture the magic of the golden fall aspens in a unique way. This led to the creation of a fun story featuring "Misty," the mist fairy, and "Flutter," the fall leaf. While the "cute" style might be different from typical epic nature videos, it was a heartfelt and joyful way for me to express the playful magic I felt in the air during that beautiful autumn season.

Your Trail Guide: Helpful Hints

  • ♦️ Drive the Loop: The main scenic loop road (Teton Park Road) has dozens of incredible pull-offs. Take your time, stop often, and enjoy all the different perspectives of the mountains.
  • ♦️ Sunrise at Mormon Row: This is a must-do for photographers. Arrive well before sunrise to get a spot, as it's a very popular location.
  • ♦️ Taggart Lake Trail: This is a great, family-friendly hike that's about 3 miles round trip. It's one of the best "bang for your buck" hikes in the park.
  • ♦️ Look for Wildlife: The scenic loop is a fantastic place to spot herds of bison and elk, especially in the morning and evening. Always keep a safe distance.

More Information about Teton National Park - Taggart Lake
  • I have been to the Tetons before, but this time I took the time to really explore the many roads at the base of the tetons. There are so many pull off to enjoy stunning views of the Tetons.
  • The sunrise shot was taken at a place called Mormon row.   It is a collection of old barns and houses built and dwelled in by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  Now they are kept looking nice by the park service.  The barn is a well know spot for photographers because of a famous picture by Ansel Adams, and many photographers gather here in the early morning hours to capture sunrise on the tetons with the famous barn in the foreground.
  • Taggart lake is an easy to follow trail that is also easy in level, and all ages could do this hike.  It might be long for a very small kid, but the trail is not too hard.  You can watch for moose or the mules off the side of the trail.  It is fun, for if you pay attention to the small off shoot trails they will lead you to great photo shoot spots.  Enough photographers come here that the trails to their secret places are not secret for they have easy to follow trails to get you to picture perfect locations.
  • I drove from Palidsades over to Jackson hoping to see if I could find a view point from another direction besides the Jackson Hole area, and I did not have any luck, but I did find you can make a nice big loop right close to the tetons, and then up to the to the Yellowstone turnoff, and then you can head back.  The loop has dozens of awesome pulloffs that are all beautiful to enjoy different views of the tetons.  This loop should also most likely help you see a herd of buffalo or elk on the journey.
