"Sorry, Dad."
This adventure has been on my bucket list for years. My dad, a fellow adventurer who has since passed away, always told me this was one of his favorite roads.
I have to admit... at first, I doubted him. I thought, "Maybe he just hadn't driven as many amazing roads as we have. Does he really have the expertise to wow me?"
But as we drove through the towering walls of Long Canyon and stood in the acoustics of Singing Canyon, I found myself looking up at the sky and begging my angel dad for forgiveness! "You were right, Dad. You knew the good stuff." By the time we descended the switchbacks, I was thanking him for leading us to such an epic adventure.
Long Canyon & Singing Walls
The drive starts with a bang in Long Canyon. It feels like entering a fortress. The towering red cliffs rise up on both sides, creating a dramatic, narrow passage.
🎶 Stop & Listen: Singing Canyon
You have to stop here. The acoustics are mind-blowing! The 80-foot sheer walls amplify every whisper.
Look Up: Find the overhang that looks like a giant Sand Worm from Dune!
Do This: If you play an instrument, bring it. If not, just clapping or singing creates an incredible natural reverb.
Secret Spot: The Purple Hoodoos 🌟
Keep your eyes peeled near the end of the canyon. We found a cluster of Hoodoos that were distinctly PURPLE! I have seen red, orange, and white hoodoos, but never purple mushroom-shaped ones with such interesting stripes. It was a unique geological surprise.
The Burr Trail Switchbacks
This is the moment everyone talks about. The road suddenly drops off the edge of the world, winding down the face of the cliff in a series of tight, dizzying switchbacks.
It sounds terrifying, but it was actually one of my favorite parts of the drive! The engineering is a marvel, and the narrow, epic cliff formations on both sides make you feel like you are descending into the earth's core.
🌋 Science Magic: The Waterpocket Fold
What you are driving down is actually a massive "wrinkle" in the Earth's crust called the Waterpocket Fold.
Seeing this connected so many dots for me! I have been intrigued by the San Rafael Swell, and seeing this same geologic uplift here in Capitol Reef—but with even more vibrant colors—was jaw-dropping. It is a 100-mile-long step in the earth's crust!
Upper Muley Twist Canyon
This is where the adventure gets gritty. We turned off the main road into Upper Muley Twist Canyon. The road here is rough, sandy, and wild.
The "ORVilla" Moment: We almost turned around. The start of the trail has a steep drop followed immediately by a sharp turn into big rocks and potholes. We were scared we wouldn't be able to back out if it got worse. But a driver coming out encouraged us: "The start is the scariest part. If you can conquer that turn, you can handle the rest." We went for it!
The Golden Nugget: Trinity Arch 🌟
The rough road leads to treasures like the Double Cheerio Arch (two perfect circles!) and the spectacular Trinity Arch.
Trinity Arch is quite possibly the most beautiful and unique arch I have ever seen. It’s a marvel where three distinct arches intertwine in a breathtaking embrace.
Frog Canyon & The Stone Forest
Our final quest was to find the elusive Frog Canyon Trail (thanks to Road Trip Ryan for the coordinates!).
I had been searching Gaia maps for a "Petrified Wood" star all day with no luck. It was maddening! But here, near Frog Canyon, we stumbled upon a treasure trove. There was a pile set out on a rock, but looking across the road into the little canyon, we saw TONS of it in its natural state.
It wasn't just wood; it was sparkling black and red stone with tree ring layers still visible. It felt like walking through a forest frozen in time.

🔎 VR Treasure Hunt
Can you find these hidden gems in the 360 video?
- The Sand Worm: In Singing Canyon, look up for the overhang that looks like a giant worm mouth!
- Purple Hoodoos: Scan the cliffs in Long Canyon for the rare purple formations.
- Garden Gnomes: Look for the cone-shaped conglomerate rocks that look like stone hats!
- Trinity Arch: Pause the video when we reach the arch and try to trace all three openings.

⚠️ Vehicle Check
The Burr Trail (paved section) is fine for most cars. However, the Muley Twist Canyon loop requires High Clearance and often 4x4. The entrance has a steep drop and sharp turn that will scrape a sedan. Know your vehicle's limits!
- 📅 Best Time: Late Spring (after road grading) or Early Fall. Summer is incredibly hot, and rain turns the clay roads into impassable "gumbo" mud.
- ⛽ Fuel Up: There are NO services for 90+ miles. Fill up in Boulder or Bullfrog before you start.
- 🗺️ Download Maps: Cell service is non-existent. Download Google Maps and Gaia GPS offline areas before you leave civilization.
Seize the Opportunity
It took time, patience, and the perfect conditions for us to finally drive this road my dad loved, but the stars aligned. This adventure is a powerful reminder that timing in life can be everything.
So my challenge to you is this: When an opportunity for a connection or adventure presents itself... Seize it! Don't wait. Don't put it off. You never know when another chance will come along. Go out there and chase those dreams!
Sending Love and Positive Vibes,
