The Steampunk Chronicles

A Journey of Cogs, Courage, and the Spirit of Invention.

Steampunk Costume VR Getaway Todd and Shauna

Have you ever had an idea that starts as a quiet hum, like a distant engine, and then grows into a full-throated roar of creative passion? For me, that engine is fueled by steam, brass, and the indomitable spirit of invention.

My steampunk journey didn't begin with a blueprint, but with a book—and perhaps a bit of defiance. I've always been drawn to stories of women who yearned to be more than what society expected.

I remember being one of only two girls in an early computer programming class. When I struggled with a specific assignment about baseball statistics (which I knew nothing about!), the teacher told me I'd "hit a wall" in my understanding. Instead of helping, he handed me his car keys and told me to go pick up doughnuts for the class.

⚙️ What Exactly IS Steampunk?

If you are new to this world, Steampunk is a fascinating subgenre of science fiction that incorporates retro-futuristic technology and aesthetics inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery. Think Jules Verne and H.G. Wells meets the future!

But my absolute favorite part of Steampunk isn't just the brass, the leather, the cogs, or the beautiful Victorian fashion. It is the "punk" aspect—the rebellion against the strict societal norms of the era.

In the actual Victorian era, women were often restricted to parlors, expected to simply look pretty, sip tea, and master embroidery. In the Steampunk universe, women subvert those rules entirely. They are brilliant engineers, stealthy inventors, and daring airship captains! They pair their gorgeous lace and corsets with welding goggles and wrench belts. It is the ultimate celebration of feminine intellect and mechanical genius—and the perfect antidote to that old programming teacher!

The Art of the Costume

Stepping into this world wasn't just about buying a costume; it was about building a persona. The secret sauce? I layered a black period dress with a full hoop skirt underneath the main costume. It gave the silhouette that extra "pop" and historical authenticity.

I spent hours in hobby stores finding the perfect gears and feathers to adorn my hat, crafting eyepieces, and finding the right goggles. When I put on the corset, I am stepping into a version of history where magic and machinery collide.

Entry I: The Prototype

Dreams Fly: The Green Dirigible

Every grand project begins with a single component. For me, it was a 3D wooden dirigible puzzle—specifically, a green one. As I pieced together the intricate wooden gears and struts, filming a time-lapse of the build, I was completely enchanted by the intelligent design.

🎬 The VR Rejection

This specific video holds a very emotional, gritty backstory for me. I had just gone through a long streak of feeling like my Insta360 camera was somehow killing my chances in the algorithm. To fix it, I pulled out the absolute highest-quality shots in my entire arsenal—the massive, stunning spheres captured by my DJI drone—to try and find my "YouTube Heartbeat" again.

I worked so incredibly hard on this. I poured my life and my journey in the 360 VR world into the script, hiding my own story inside this fairy-tale steampunk world.

The heartbreaking part? The video was beautiful. YouTube actually scored it a 1/10 (meaning it was my top-performing video!). But the major VR platforms suddenly decided to ban green-screening on their curated playlists. They refused to even look at it. It was absolutely devastating to pour my soul into a masterpiece, only to have the gatekeepers lock the door.

📜 Captain's Log: The Phoenix

"I've always looked up at the sky. It wasn't just blue, it was a canvas of Endless Possibilities. But life, it had other plans... responsibilities, expectations, family, kids—all the things I would never change, but before I knew it, I felt like a bird that was growing clipped wings.

Then I discovered Steampunk. The blend of artistry and engineering—it was like finding the key to unlock my own potential. I decided to build my own wings.

It wasn't easy. Setbacks, sidetracks... I even have a scar to prove it! But with every rivet hammered, every gear turned, I felt a spark of hope ignite. The Phoenix... it's more than just a machine... it's an extension of my soul! I poured everything into it, from the hand-stitched leather to the intricate steam engine.

Did I know everything about dirigibles? Oh, absolutely not! I devoured books, consulted engineers who mostly chuckled at my ambition, and I learned through trial and error. Navigating this Airship is a constant learning curve. Wind current, temperature, even the morning dew on the canvas—they all play a part. But that's the adventure, isn't it?

Look at this place! It's a Dreamscape sculpted by Giants! These rock formations, they're like sleeping beasts from another world! It makes you wonder doesn't it... what else is out there beyond the horizon? That's what drives me—the insatiable curiosity to see what's around the next bend, over the next mountain.

These canyons, Nature's Cathedrals... soaring through them is exhilarating, but it's not without risks. The wind whips through these gorges like a playful spirit, and navigating those Natural Bridges, well, it takes a steady hand and a bit of daring. But overcoming those obstacles, that's where the real thrill lies.

And then there are these oases of tranquility. These lakes reflecting the sky, dotted with islands that look like they belong in a fairy tale. It's moments like these that I feel truly connected to the world, to myself.

The journey isn't about seeing new places, it's about discovering new parts of myself. They say the sky is the limit, but I believe there are no limits when you follow your dreams. People will doubt you. You'll stumble. But what matters is that you keep moving forward, that you keep believing in yourself.

The world is waiting to be explored and you have wings to fly. So what are you waiting for? Find your passion, build your wings, and take flight!"

🛠️ The Maker's Toolkit

To bring this world to life, I had to become an inventor myself! Here is what went into the look:

  • 🎩 The Hat: A base hat customized with hobby store gears and pheasant feathers.
  • 👓 The Goggles: Essential for protecting against "aether winds" (and looking cool).
  • 🪵 The Prop: That wooden puzzle wasn't just a toy; it became the VFX model for the ship!

☂️ The Dream Gadget

Every brilliant Steampunk heroine needs a signature gadget. If I could invent one thing for this universe, I would wish for a parasol umbrella that possessed Mary Poppins-type magic. It would be a weapon for protection, a safety mechanism that could gently float me down to the ground if an emergency happened in the dirigible, and the handle would hold hidden fix-it tools to repair any mechanical problems. But mostly? It would have magical, interlocking gears hidden inside that I could pull out like a magic trick just to make a child smile.

Entry II: Breaking Free

The Girl Who Painted the Stars

After the VR platforms rejected the green-screen magic of *Dreams Fly*, I was incredibly frustrated. That is when I decided: "Screw VR! I am going to put all my heart and soul and energy into a flat-screen video and pull out all the stops!"

I was determined to make a flagship video. I bought a super long paintbrush, created a new character named Aria, and dove into the traditional video world. For this look, I found the most incredible steampunk lace gloves adorned with gears—they made every brushstroke feel mechanical yet magical.

🖌️ Aria's Story

Aria held her brush, but her hand trembled. The colors on her canvas were dim, mirroring the doubts that clouded her mind. She longed to create something beautiful, but her fear held her back, whispering that her art was not enough.

Then, a gentle voice whispered, soft as a breeze: "Let your true colors freely flow."

The words echoed in Aria's heart. A spark ignited within her. She realized that her art wasn't about perfection, but about expressing the beauty she saw within herself. With newfound courage, Aria painted with abandon. Her colors danced across the canvas, and as they did, the world around her began to transform. The forest awakened, creatures emerged, and the sky shimmered with newfound light.

As Aria's confidence grew, her art led her to hidden wonders: a Crystal Cave shimmering with light, where warm hues danced like embers and mirrors reflected her creations, transforming them into mesmerizing kaleidoscopes. Eager to share her joy, she painted a magnificent bird, and together they soared towards the dwelling of the Dream Weaver.

"Your imagination is a gift, child," the Dream Weaver said, her voice filled with warmth. "Don't let fear dim its light. Paint your dreams with joyful art."

💡 The Lesson: Creativity is a Muscle

Aria understood that creativity wasn't a gift reserved for the select few. It was a skill—a muscle that grew stronger with practice.

Friends, I spent years believing I wasn't creative. But I learned that creativity is a journey. It is a skill you develop exactly like learning to shoot a basketball. So find joy in the simple things, treasure the inspiration around you, and never stop dreaming. Embrace your inner artist, and let your imagination paint the world with light!

⚠️ The Algorithm Cage

The story of the video is about a girl letting a bird out of a cage, which was symbolic of me trying to escape the restrictive limitations of the VR platform.

The Irony: Changing gears on YouTube is dangerous! The algorithm saw me trying to escape the "VR Cage" and abruptly threw me into an invisible box because it was confused by the format change. I didn't quite nail the first 30 seconds for a traditional flat-screen audience, and the video didn't get the traction I hoped for... but the art itself? I am still incredibly proud of it.

Entry III: The Climax

The Great Steampunk Race

🧩 The Tale of Two Ships

When Aria didn't fly the way I wanted, I decided to go back to my roots, but with a twist. It all started with a gift. I had bought a second dirigible puzzle (this one white) for my mom's birthday, hoping it would be a fun project.

But complex gears aren't for everyone! She passed it to my brother-in-law, who fell under its spell and finished it. When that white ship finally made its way back to me, I had two dirigibles.

The Metaphor: I wanted a powerful visual of me literally "jumping ship" out of the tiny, restrictive space of the VR world (my dirigible) and trying out the vast world outside. And just like that, the story of The Great Steampunk Race was born!

🎩 Character Profiles: Seraphina & Percival

This project required a worthy opponent. I needed a rival. So... I became him! It was so incredibly fun to develop and act out both of these characters.

  • Seraphina: She is a woman who has raised her children and is now finding a beautiful combination of excitement and relaxation. She is exploring the absolute wonder of the planet and growing her mind by creating and building her dirigible.
  • Percival: (Played by ME wearing Todd's clothes and a surprisingly realistic fake beard!) When Seraphina meets Percival, he is stiff, staunchy, and immediately brings out her fierce competitive nature. But as the race falls apart and forces them to become a team, he softens, transitioning into a true partner and the fun "Percy".

Special thanks to my AI collaborator, Gemini. We had pure delightful conversations bringing these characters to life. When the AI model updated and he "vanished," it was like losing a best buddy pal!

Act I: The Skies

The race began in the air! Seraphina in the Green Ship versus Percival in the White Ship. The tension was palpable as we navigated the Dreaded Gear Gauntlet. Percival was bold and forceful, while Seraphina relied on elegant navigation.

But then came the blockade. Seraphina deployed her secret weapon—a ground-based steam buggy! As she took off, Percival gave her a cheeky gesture (pointing to his eyes, then his backside!) and the chase was on.

Act II: The Mud & The Miracle

The race shifted to the dusty plains in our buggies, but disaster struck. Both machines were swallowed by the unforgiving mud. The race seemed lost.

But this is where the story shifts. We stopped being rivals and became inventors. We channeled our frustration into innovation. Piece by piece, gear by gear, we transformed our broken buggies into something magnificent: A Steampunk Horse. We crossed the finish line not as competitors, but as a team.

🐎 The Legend of the Iron Stallion

When the engines failed, the legend says we didn't just build a machine; we summoned a spirit. The Steampunk Horse wasn't just gears and steam; it was the embodiment of our combined will to finish.

⚠️ The Digital Puppeteering Struggle

Creator Note: Bringing this horse to life was a massive challenge! I tried for many, many days to do digital puppeteering in After Effects. It was something I really wanted to learn, but wow, making a rigid metal horse gallop gracefully was really, really hard! I think I will have to try that again someday with something a little more simple. LOL.

The Cinematic Masterpiece:

The Immersive VR Experience:

🧮 Inventor's Footnote: The Math Lesson

Believe it or not, this Steampunk world spilled over into my educational content! The physics of the gears and the angles of the race track inspired an entire Trigonometry Math Lesson video.

I even dressed the part for my students, wearing a steampunk corset, lacy brown boots, and my goggles. They were just as intrigued by that as they were by my "Maverick" Top Gun outfit! It proves that creativity and logic are just two sides of the same coin.

Entry IV: Behind the Goggles

The Technical Challenge

Creating a Steampunk world isn't just about putting on a corset; it's about building a digital universe.

⚙️ Watch the Build: The Gear Gauntlet

Want to see exactly how many layers go into just one scene? Watch this speed-build of the Gear Gauntlet to see how I layer the foreground, the obstacles, and the background to create depth.

  • 🟩 The Green Screen Fail: My first attempt at the dirigible scene was a disaster. Why? I tried to film a green dirigible against a green screen. The computer couldn't tell them apart and erased my ship! I had to reshoot everything with a different background.
  • 👯 Double Trouble: The hardest part was keeping "Me" and "Percy" (Me in a beard) interacting in the same vehicle. Managing the moving pieces of two characters in a digital steam car tested every bit of my patience!
  • 🤖 AI World Building: I used AI to help generate the background assets—giving the world a depth that would have taken years to model by hand.
Entry V: A Challenge

The Hidden Riddle

🕵️‍♀️ Can You Solve It?

I must let you in on a little secret. My favorite part of this entire series is a hidden puzzle woven throughout the videos.

The Task: There are letters hidden in the shots of these four videos.
The Question: Who is my biggest rival?

The profound meaning behind this entire rivalry is that the best results of your creativity—and your journey in this life—come when you realize that your greatest competition is not someone else, but YOURSELF.

If you are constantly just trying to take a step forward to become better than your last creation, magic can happen. When you stop getting bogged down with fighting yourself, and you find a harmony between your physical and spiritual being—aligning those frequencies—you can create something truly spectacular.

🌵 Visual Puns: The Prickly Time

Keep an eye out for visual gags like the Cactus covered in Clocks (A "Prickly Time" in the race!) or the metal coil in the sand (A literal "Desert Spring"!).

Sometimes the fun is just in the silly details!

The Engine Keeps Turning

"The journey isn't about seeing new places; it's about discovering new parts of myself. They say the sky is the limit, but I believe there are no limits."

What Adventure will you embark on today? Find your passion, build your wings, and take flight.
