Gravity Slingshot Rational Functions

How do you teach students to see the elegant, powerful physics hidden within an abstract equation? You challenge them to become elite starship pilots! In this lesson, we transform graphing rational functions into a high-stakes mission: mastering the Gravity Slingshot.

📜 Mission Briefing

  • 🎯 Mission Objective: Students will identify a celestial object's "Gravity Well" (vertical asymptote) and "Escape Trajectory" (horizontal asymptote) to map the perfect slingshot path.
  • ⏳ Class Time: 1 x 85-minute period
  • 📚 Subject & Level: Secondary Math 3 / Algebra 2
  • 👻 The Adventure: Students are new pilots in the Wayfinder's Guild, learning to chart a "Gravity Slingshot" maneuver by mapping its gravitational boundaries (asymptotes) and defining the "Safe Flight Corridor" (domain and range).

👕 Costume & Prop Ideas

Become the "Guild Master" or the "Lead Wayfinder" of the VRGetaway exploration crew! Your look should feel like you belong on the bridge of a starship, ready to lead your pilots on an epic journey through the cosmos.

  • The Starship Captain: A cool jacket is all you need to set the tone. Think of a bomber jacket, a sleek futuristic vest, or even a simple dark blazer. The key is to look like you're in command. A simple headset can complete the look.

  • The Master Cartographer: For a more scholarly feel, go with a vest with lots of pockets and rolled-up sleeves. Your main prop could be a large, rolled-up "star chart" (you can print a picture of a nebula) that you can use to point out the mission objectives.

  • The Ultimate Prop: Your tablet or phone can become a "holographic data pad." Use it to "receive transmissions," display the mission objectives, or "analyze the flight path" data from your student teams.

🗺️ The Walkthrough

✨ Introduction: The Guild Induction Ceremony (Approx. 15 mins)

✨ Introduction: The Guild Master's Address (Approx. 5 mins)

The Guild Induction Ceremony (With Heart)

(As the "Guild Master," but speaking more as their trusted guide and mentor)

"Welcome, explorers. Before we begin, I just have to say how incredibly proud I am of every single one of you. I saw you track the Cubic Strikers when their paths were hidden. I saw you hunt the legendary Quartic Leviathan when the challenge seemed impossible. I have seen what you can do, and it is truly brilliant.

That's why I know, without a doubt, that you are ready for what comes next.

Today, your journey as cryptozoologists ends, and your new life as explorers in the Portal Exploration Guild begins. We are leaving the familiar paths of polynomials behind and stepping into the void. And I'm going to be honest with you: the trajectories of these portals are strange. They seem broken. They have boundaries you can never cross. There will be moments where your mind tells you, 'This is impossible.'

And when that moment comes, I want you to remember that I am here with you, and I will not let you fail. My belief in you isn't just words. It's a plan. It's a promise. That promise is this Guild's sacred text: your 'Steps to Success.'"

(Hold up the "Steps to Success" document - Steps to Success)

"This isn't just a list of instructions. This is the path. Every explorer who has ever felt lost and found their way, did so by trusting this guide. If you stay on this path, I promise you, you will succeed.

So let's prepare for the journey. First, your Mission Itinerary."

(Hand out the Unit Schedule - Unit 3 Schedule)

"And now, it's time to make a promise to the most important person on this mission: yourself. This is your Explorer's Oath."

(Hand out the Goal Cards - Goal Cards)

"What is your goal for this unit? What will you conquer? Write it down. Commit to it. Know that I am here to help you reach it, every step of the way."

(Now, lead the class in your power statement)

"I believe in you. Now you need to believe in yourselves. Are you ready to chart the unknown? Let me hear it!"

  • "I Got This! I Can Do This!"

  • "I Got This! I Can Do This!"

  • "I Got This! I Can Do This!"

"Excellent. Welcome to the Guild, Explorers."

⚔️ Warm-Up: The Activation Sequence (Approx. 10 mins)

The Master Class: The Laws of Gravitational Flight (15 mins)

  • The Story: "Excellent predictions, pilots. Now, let's learn the physics behind the flight paths. The Guild Master will now reveal the secrets of the 'Gravity Well' and the 'Escape Trajectory.'"

  • The Activity: This is your direct instruction using the Google Slides to formally teach asymptotes, domain, and range.

The Story: "Cadets, before you can enter the high-tech simulator, you must prove you can perform the basic activation sequence. You cannot fly a slingshot maneuver until you know its boundaries."

The Activity: A quick, collaborative warm-up where teams identify asymptotes, domain, and range on whiteboards from equations you project on the main screen.

The Pre-Flight Briefing: Predicting Trajectories (10 mins)

  • The Story: "Wayfinders, before your first simulation, we must test your intuition. We're receiving faint energy signatures from uncharted space. Analyze the nav-coordinates and predict the flight path."

  • The Activity: This is your new "Predicting Trajectories" starter. It's a low-stakes, high-engagement way to get them thinking about the shapes and boundaries of the graphs before they know the formal rules. Use these for Practice on Domain and Range.

🔥 Main Activity: The Flight Simulator (Approx. 45 mins)

The Story: "Excellent work activating your consoles. Now that you know the boundaries, it's time to enter the Flight Simulator and practice the maneuver."

The Activity: Students work individually on the IDO Flight Simulator, using the visual sliders to master the transformations. (Note for teachers: To get access to this amazing resource, please contact darcistone@alpinedistrict.org! Also, please hit "submit" to start the quiz fresh.)

The Archives: Filing the Flight Plans (15 mins)

  • The Story: "You've successfully flown the simulator. Your final training task for today is to file the official flight plans in the Guild's archives. Accuracy is critical."

  • The Activity: This is your new "Domain and Range Sort" activity. Teams work together to match equations to their correct domain and range, cementing their understanding of the boundaries.

👾 The Final Boss

📝 The Final Certification (At Home Quiz)

The Story: "Your training for today is complete. Now you must pass your final certification exam to prove you are ready for more complex missions."

The Activity: Students work individually on the Final Certification Exam(Note for teachers: To get access to this amazing resource, please contact darcistone@alpinedistrict.org! Also, please hit "submit" to start the quiz fresh.)

🏆 The Level Clear Screen: Pilot's Debrief

The Story: "Excellent work in the simulators, Pilot. Report back to the Guild Master and file your flight review. How well did you execute the Gravity Slingshot maneuver today?"

The Activity: Students use their [Printable Exit Ticket] to complete their Self-Reported Grade.

Exit Ticket Self Evaluation

🔟 Ace Pilot! (A "10" Report)

I can flawlessly identify a celestial object's "Gravity Well" (vertical asymptote) and the "Escape Trajectory" (horizontal asymptote) to map the perfect slingshot path from any set of coordinates.

🎱 Skilled Pilot! (An "8" Report)

I am confident in charting the main path but need to be careful when the maneuver is inverted or the gravitational pull is stronger (stretched).

⭐ Cadet Pilot! (A "6" Report)

I can identify the center of the gravitational object (h, k) but need more practice mapping the full "Safe Flight Corridor" (domain and range).

🌱 Lost in Space... (A "4" Report)

The slingshot maneuver is still a mystery. I need more guidance from the Guild Master to understand the basic flight controls.
