Exponential Rocket Sled |
We've mastered constant speed and constant acceleration. Now, it's time to unleash explosive power! In this lesson, we introduce exponential functions by unveiling the lab's most powerful prototype: the "Rocket Sled." Welcome to Day 3 of the Velocity Design Lab!
📜 Mission Briefing
- 🎯 Mission Objective: Students will be able to identify exponential patterns from tables, graphs, and situations, and differentiate them from linear and quadratic functions.
- ⏳ Class Time: 1 x 75-minute period
- 📚 Subject & Level: Algebra 2 / Secondary Math 2
- 🗓️ Unit Schedule: Day 3 of our Comparing Functions Unit. You can see the full schedule for the entire quest here: Unit 1 Schedule
- 👻 The Adventure: Engineers will discover the "Multiplying Growth Signature" of the new "Rocket Sled" prototype. Their main mission is to complete the "Grand Challenge," sorting data from all three vehicle classes and decrypting the secret to the Rocket Sled's ultimate power.

The Lab Entrance: The Grand Challenge Line-Up!
(Prompt: "A cinematic, wide-screen image from a futuristic video game, showing three distinct vehicles lined up side-by-side in a high-tech hangar: a blue sedan, a green gravity racer, and a fiery orange rocket sled. The title 'The Grand Challenge' is displayed above.")
🗺️ The Walkthrough
✨ Introduction: The Motivational Message (Approx. 5 mins)
As students enter, I have the "Rocket Sled" title screen up with some futuristic music. I start with our themed motivational message:
"Welcome back, Engineers. Today, we unlock a completely new class of energy. This isn't about adding speed anymore. This is about multiplying it. The Rocket Sled operates on a different principle... its potential for growth is explosive and limitless. It's a reminder that the most powerful forces often have the quietest beginnings..."
We then launch into our power statement: "I Got This! I Can Do This!"
⚔️ Activity 1: The Spreading Secret (Approx. 15 mins)
The Story: "The specs for the Rocket Sled are top secret. Let's see how quickly a secret can spread..."
The Activity: This is a quick, engaging discovery activity. We model how a rumor spreads (1 person tells 2, who each tell 2 more, etc.) and create a table (`1, 2, 4, 8...`). Students immediately see that this pattern isn't adding a constant number; it's **multiplying by 2** every time. This is the "fingerprint" of exponential growth.
⚔️ Activity 2: The Grand Challenge (Approx. 40 mins)

Compare Linear, Qudradtic, and Exponential |
Objective: To sort and identify linear, quadratic, and exponential functions in various forms.
The Story: "Engineers, it's time for the Grand Challenge. Data from all three prototypes has been mixed up! Your guild's final mission is to correctly sort the performance reports. For those taking on the digital challenge, your correct answers will decrypt the secret to the Rocket Sled's ultimate power!"
Instructions: Guilds work together on either the printable matching cards or the gamified idocourses.com version. The digital version has them unlock the secret message: `EXPONENTIAL GROWTH WILL ALWAYS WIN`.

Phase 2 on IDO Courses:
Decrypt the Blueprint!(Each correct answer in your simulation will reveal a fragment of the final secret.)
Your Script: "Engineers, as you complete the Grand Challenge, pay attention to the blueprint fragments you unlock. The final secret of the Rocket Sled is hidden within!"

🏆 The Level Clear Screen: Engineer's Self-Assessment
The Story: "File your final performance review. A great engineer always reflects on their work."
The Activity: On the back of their Unit Check-off Schedule, students complete their Self-Reported Grade.
- 10 (Chief Propulsion Engineer!): I have mastered exponential growth and can design my own rockets.
- 8 (Senior Engineer!): I am very close to mastery and confident with all three prototypes.
- 6 (Junior Engineer!): I can identify the patterns with some help, but I need more practice.
- 4 (Intern...): I'm still getting the hang of these powerful engines.
