The Armchair Traveler Ritual
Before we descend deep into the earth, set the scene: Turn on the AC to feel that constant 55-degree cave air, dim the lights in your room, and imagine the smell of damp earth and massive pine trees. Don't drop your lantern!
⚡ The Quick Scoop
The Route: Leaving Sequoia NP, heading deep into Kings Canyon, then North to Moaning Cavern.
Must See: The unexpected Butterfly Inlet at Hume Lake.

Shauna's Rating: 💎💎💎💎💎 (Magical & Terrifying!)
Just as you leave the majestic giants of Sequoia National Park, another adventure awaits in the lesser-known but equally spectacular Kings Canyon.
This trip was a major chapter in our epic "California to Canada Odyssey." Before we even started our descent, I had to do some emergency surgery on my 360 camera after a little mishap on our last adventure (thankfully, your "virtual head" got a fresh start!). We had already spent three glorious days enjoying the Sequoias, so we decided to pivot and focus our time here on the charming waterfalls, the serene lakes, and the deep, mysterious caverns waiting below the surface.
🌊 The Grand Confluence
As you drop into the canyon, you are treated to an epic view where two rivers converge, creating a breathtaking confluence. It’s a hidden gem nestled within the heart of California. As we approached the depths, we kept our eyes peeled for the majestic King's River, whose crystal-clear waters carved this natural masterpiece over countless centuries.

The Bearded Angel & The Butterflies
Our journey here was a wild ride. Leaving Sequoia, the extreme heatwave was taking its toll. As we drove toward Kings Canyon, we debated: "Do we need to not do this? Is it too hard for poor old ORVilla?"
🌡️ The Overheat Warning
Looking down into the canyon at the overlook had me seriously rethinking our decision. That tiny road at the bottom was a *long* way down! There were sections of white-knuckle steering, but honestly, it was mostly just a smooth, beautiful ride.
But ORVilla disagreed. She actually overheated and quit working! It was terrifying thinking about the towing costs and potentially losing our vehicle in the middle of nowhere. We managed to pull over, pop the hood, and cool her down in the shade. We ended up trading van life for a hotel with AC for one night just to recover before facing the steep, winding climb out!
🏍️ The Bearded Angel
Before the breakdown, while stuck in construction traffic watching enormous sequoias being dragged down the road on trucks, we met a man on a motorcycle. He had the most incredible beard! We didn't get his name, but we will never forget watching that magical beard flapping in the wind as we followed him!
He leaned over during the traffic stop and gave us a tip that would define our day: "Take the detour to Hume Lake."
🦋 The Butterfly Effect & Baby Ducks
The detour was absolutely worth it. Driving across the beautiful bridge to Hume Lake felt like entering a dreamland. On the way to the lake, I walked down to a small inlet and was suddenly surrounded by hundreds of butterflies. It was magical. I felt like a kid again chasing these cool wonders!
We also spent time watching a momma duck and her cute babies coming right out of the reeds. It was a quiet, beautiful reminder that even when plans fall apart (and trucks overheat!), magic is waiting just around the corner. Teleporting to a place like this... now that's living the dream!
Grizzly Falls
Hume Lake was a perfect escape from the heat—we paddled and watched a family of ducks. But our peaceful day took a dramatic turn at Grizzly Falls.
"Wow, check out the power of nature! Grizzly Falls, you magnificent beast! Can you feel the spray on your face and hear the thunderous roar?"
Todd's excitement to capture the perfect shot led him a little too close to that thunderous spray. It resulted in a soaked, ruined Rode microphone! Worse, a slip on the wet rocks near the thundering water nearly led to a broken wrist!
⚠️ Slick Rock Warning
Grizzly Falls is powerful and beautiful, but the mist makes the surrounding granite incredibly slick. Admire the beauty, but keep your footing secure! We left with a dead mic and a sore wrist, but thankfully no broken bones.
Boyden Cavern
With a dead mic, a scratched camera lens, a sore Todd, and a truck we weren't sure would start again, we pushed on to Boyden Cavern. It sits at the bottom of a massive gorge, carved by the mighty Kings River. Descending into it felt like discovering a secret underground kingdom full of sparkling formations and mysterious depths.
The delicate formations here, known as speleothems, have been growing for thousands of years, drip by drip, creating intricate masterpieces of nature's artistry. As we went deeper, mesmerizing stalactites and stalagmites hung from the ceiling like icy chandeliers.
🥓 The Breakfast Torture
The tour guide was fantastic, but she had a fun "breakfast" theme, pointing out formations that looked like bacon, syrup, and stacks of pancakes. Normally, rock formations looking like food is funny. But since a power outage in the park had prevented us from cooking hot food for days, we were suffering from serious "Sandwich Fatigue." Hearing about crispy bacon while living off lukewarm ham and cheese was absolute torture! We were practically hallucinating brunch by the end of the tour.
🔦 The Adventure Exit
The guide told us the story of the cave's original owner, who got lost inside for two days in the dark when his candle burnt out, finding his way out only by following the sound of the water.
Then, she turned off the lights! The darkness was absolute. We had an "Adventure Exit," shuffling through a pitch-black passage that got incredibly narrow. I banged my 360 camera right against the wall!
The path suddenly dropped off, and before I knew it, I was wading through water up to my knees! My feet were freezing cold. It was a very long, thrilling exit. Thinking about that poor man trying to work his way out for two days was constantly on my mind... yet Todd's hilarious personality and jokes made it such an entertaining and funny experience for us!
Moaning Cavern
Further down the road, we visited another incredible site: Moaning Cavern. This cave gets its name from a strange sound that used to drift out of the entrance. The specific shape of the rock created a whistling sound when the wind blew, sounding like a low moan from the earth. It is fun to sit at the base of the cavern and think about how that moaning sound freaked out so many early explorers! Today, it looks a bit like a little sluice box for mining.
🌀 The 10-Story Descent
The main feature here is a colossal flowstone that feels dinosaur-level old. But to get to it, you have to descend a massive 10-story metal spiral staircase right into the void! It is like descending a giant, natural corkscrew.
📸 Science Magic: The Old-School Camera Trick
Going into caves is tricky because they are really picky about their "No Tripods" rules. But I have a trick up my sleeve! I am old school and know how well Google Spheres handle crazy lighting. Since I couldn't use a tripod for a stable video, I shot Google Spheres instead! The spiral staircase makes it super hard for most traditional cameras to capture the sheer drop, but my 360 camera captured it beautifully.
🍫 The Dark Chocolate Science
As you look around Moaning Cavern, you'll notice the formations are a beautiful, dark chocolate color. Why are they so brown? It's due to iron oxide—which is essentially rust! It comes from a mixture of mineral-rich groundwater, iron, fortified clay, and organic matter.
These features are absolutely incredible. They grow incredibly slowly—only a few millimeters per century. That means these giant, chocolate-colored ribbons could be hundreds of thousands of years old!

Moaning Cavern Overview
Shauna's Survival Guide
- 🚗 The Drive: The drive into Kings Canyon (Hwy 180) is a "White Knuckle" scenic byway. It twists and turns along steep cliffs. Todd made the smart choice to drive out when it was cooling off to save the truck!
- ⚡ Power & Food Warning: The power grid here is rickety (lightning knocked it out while we were there!). This means no restaurants and often bans on campfires/jet boils. Bring plenty of "no-cook" food unless you want to live on sandwiches like we did!
- 🌡️ Temperature Shock: Caves are a cool 55°F (13°C) year-round. It might be 100°F outside, but you will want a jacket inside!
- 🎟️ Book Ahead: Cave tours have limited capacity. We learned the hard way that some caverns are closed certain days of the week. Check the official websites for Boyden Cavern and Moaning Cavern to reserve your spot and double-check their hours.
- 🗺️ The Detour: Don't just stick to the main road. The turnoff for Hume Lake is easy to miss but totally worth it for the butterflies and swimming.

Out of the Darkness
Our day in Kings Canyon was a perfect reminder that life is a rollercoaster. When the bad things happen—the dead battery, the wet microphone, the slip on a rock—there is no need to shake your hands at the sky.
If you find yourself in the dark, scared you won't get out, remember the man in the cave. Your little stream is in your heart. Just have hope that there is help there, and keep taking one step further following that light. It will always lead you out of the darkness.
