The Armchair Traveler Ritual
Before we step onto this sandy canyon floor, set the scene: Turn on a fan to simulate the canyon wind whipping through the narrows, pour a cold glass of lemonade, and imagine the smell of dry desert dust mixed with sweet spring flowers!

⚡ The Quick Scoop
The Vibe: A perfectly flat, breathtaking stroll right through the bottom of a massive, towering gorge. It makes you feel incredibly small in the best way possible.
The Secret Hack: Start from the East Side trailhead (just past the ranger station) instead of the popular West side! You will hit the spectacular "Narrows" section in only 1/3 of the time.
Accessibility: ♿ Level 1 Hike! The path is mostly flat and level. While getting down into the wash from the cars has some medium rocks and sand that can be challenging at first, a rugged, all-terrain wheelchair (like my friend Daniel Sunshine uses!) could probably make it with just a little bit of help.
Shauna's Rating: 💎💎💎💎💎 (An epic 5 out of 5 Diamonds!)
Sometimes, the best adventures are born from absolute exhaustion. Two weeks prior to this trip, we had just finished three grueling days of hard hiking at Natural Bridges National Monument. The heat was beating down, our legs were completely mushy, and to top it all off, a massive windstorm kicked up, blasting sand straight through Grand Wash.
We looked at each other and said, "Nope." We tapped out. We decided we needed to come back when we weren't on the verge of heatstroke and our legs weren't completely exhausted. So, back we went the following weekend!

The East Side Secret
I had originally thought I would do Cassidy Arch and Grand Wash back-to-back in one day. But Cassidy Arch is a lot harder and longer than the maps make it feel, and the final section navigating to the arch is honestly a little scary. Looking at the Gaia GPS map, there were trails spider-webbing all over the place trying to find the finale. So, I made a really great call: we would dedicate our energy to Grand Wash, and we would do it the smart way.
🗺️ The 1/3 Distance Hack
Instead of starting from the most common West side trailhead (which connects to Cassidy Arch), I decided we would drive around and start from the East side. Why? Because the absolute most epic place in Grand Wash is the Narrows, and many hikers who start on the West side get too tired and turn around before they ever reach it!
If you start from the East side, it is only 1/3 of the distance to get straight into the spectacular Narrows!
There is just one strange quirk about the East side trailhead: there are absolutely no restrooms! I am really not sure why that is, but people should be aware. The restrooms down at Hickman Bridge have broken locks on the doors and are quite smelly. Take advantage of the less-used visitor center restrooms before you head to the East trailhead!
The canyon starts off feeling wide, dry, and dusty, and you might briefly wonder, "Is this worth it?" But YES! It definitely is! Keep walking. The canyon walls keep squeezing tighter and growing taller until you are absolutely spellbound.
Caves & The Hummingbird Moth
About a half-mile in on the right side, there are some incredibly fun caverns and hollows eroded into the canyon walls that you can actually walk into.
🎬 Behind the Scenes: The Gimbal Ghost
Todd was pretty funny when I disappeared into one of these caves. He was totally shocked that it went so far back! He stayed outside and tried to get a cool, sweeping gimbal shot panning into the darkness. When we watched the footage later, it just looked like a black hole with two weird white spots floating in the back of the cave... and then all of a sudden, I step out of the shadows and come into focus! It was so spooky and interesting!
If you visit in the spring, there are lovely little flowers blooming along the edges of the trail that smell wonderful. They attract these huge, buzzing black bees, but the biggest "WOW" moment for me was spotting what I thought was a tiny bird!
🦋 The Great Debate
We had quite the bet going right there on the trail about what exactly this creature was. I was completely convinced it was a hummingbird! It hovered perfectly in mid-air, darting from flower to flower. Todd told me his reasons for why it was actually a moth, and I just stood there shaking my head in pure unbelief.
Turns out, Todd was right! I managed to capture it on video, and it was a White-lined Sphinx moth (Hyles lineata). They are also known as "Hummingbird Moths"! They are fascinating creatures, unrolling their super-long tongues to plunge deep into the flowers to eat the nectar, then rolling them back up. It is going to look absolutely epic in the upcoming Slow TV video!
Sunset, Birds, and Bats
If you can time your hike for sunset, the canyon takes on a whole new life. The lighting bounces off the towering Wingate sandstone, and there are little patches of green brush along the wash that become incredibly active with birds. You MUST stop, stand still, and just listen.
🦇 Todd's Expert Timing
As the sun dipped lower, the shadows in the narrows grew deep. I heard some high-pitched sounds echoing off the walls and asked Todd, "Do you think any of those sounds are bats?"
Todd confidently said no, and proceeded to give me a very detailed, logical explanation about why the sounds we were hearing were definitely all just evening birds settling in, and not bats at all.
I kid you not, less than two minutes later, a bat swoops down and flies right past our heads! I just slowly turned and looked at him. He paused, sighed, and said, "Yeah... you are right. That was definitely a bat." LOL!
A Speck of Dust (The Healing Canyon)
When you roam through Grand Wash, it is a deeply humbling experience. The walls are so incredibly tall, and you realize how very small you are. If you believe in any sort of Deity that had a hand in the creation of this amazing planet, this is one of those places where you truly feel its greatness.
✨ The Invisible Hug
You stand there, surrounded by towering stone, and then you look up at the stars emerging in the universe above the canyon rim, and you feel like nothing more than a tiny speck of dust.
But here is my message for you today: I hope you remember—or at least believe me—that even though we are just particles of dust in the grand scheme of things, that Deity loves and cares about you, and is willing to help you. I have had inspiration when I needed help SO many times. I have had times when I was in tears, when my life felt like it was falling apart, and I felt like the arms of a being far beyond this world wrapped me in a tight hug, sharing that they loved me and that it would be okay.
It is good to feel the humility of the canyon, yet also proudly accept that there is a Father figure up there who really loves you and cares so incredibly much.
