Shauna's Rating: 💎💎💎💎💎 (My Favorite!)

Do you ever feel the need to just... stop? To let the world fall away? That feeling is what led me to this journey on what is now my favorite wildflower hike ever: the loop over Catherine Pass.

This trail is more than just a path; it's a meditation. I call it my "Sound of Music" trail—not just because of the wind blowing through the flowers and pines, but because being here makes me feel like Maria. I am so in love with these mountains that my heart literally sings.

Part I: Into the Garden

Wildflowers & Meadows

The journey begins with an uphill climb where wildflowers greet you at every turn. With each step, the combination of the vibrant flowers—Indian Paintbrush, Lupine, Columbine—and the vast mountain vistas is simply stunning.

I've done hundreds of hikes, and this is hands-down the most beautiful wildflower hike I have ever experienced. You can't help but relax and breathe in the healing energy. Just when the reality of the steady climb starts to set in, a charming meadow opens up, offering a perfect place to sit and soak in nature.

"Find a moment to simply be. To watch the world dance without you. There is peace in becoming the observer."

🦌 Wildlife Watch: The Moose

While I didn't spot them on this specific trip, this basin is famous for its Moose population! I have had lovely encounters here before where we kept running into them all day. They love the willows near the lakes.

Part II: The Alpine Trio

Lake Catherine

Most people stop at the overlook to see Lake Catherine from a distance. It’s beautiful from up there, sparkling like a sapphire. But we wanted to truly feel and connect with it, so we made the choice to take the steep descent down to its shores.

It's a commitment—knowing you have to endure climbing right back up that mountain—but wandering around the pristine shoreline is so worth it.

⚠️ Watershed Warning: Look, Don't Touch!

As tempting as the water looks, swimming is strictly prohibited. This area is a protected watershed that provides drinking water for Salt Lake City.

Trust me, you wouldn't want to swim anyway! This lake is surrounded by tall peaks that block the sunlight, meaning it holds ice well into June. It is bone-chillingly cold!

📖 Traveler's Tale: The Choice

After soaking it all in at the lake, we began the grueling hike back out, arriving at the pass spent and exhausted. Here, we faced a choice. A sign pointed back down the way we came, or further up, to the very top of the mountain.

Do we push on up that very steep climb? Yes, we do. We embrace the challenges of life. It’s not about going fast; it’s about taking it slow, telling yourself, "I can do one more step."

Part III: Top of the World

Sunset Peak (Supreme Summit)

You take a break if challenges get overwhelming, but don't give up! Then you make it to the top and conquer the challenge, and it is so worth the hardship.

Sunset Peak is unique because it is the meeting point of three major canyons. From the top, you have a 360-degree view, including the backside of the famous Mount Timpanogos.

Funny enough, having hiked Timp hundreds of times, I barely recognized it from this angle! It loses some of its majesty when it blends in with the sea of other peaks. It was a little humbling to see it looking just like "another mountain."

🚧 The Ski Lift Reality

It is a bit strange to be so isolated in nature and then summit the mountain only to find... a ski lift. This is the top of the Supreme Lift at Brighton Resort.

While the wildflowers are stunning on the edge, the closer you get to the lift, the more you see roads and construction. It’s a reminder of how the wild and the tame worlds meet up here.

The Surprise Descent 🌟

Don't Miss This: The surprise wildflower explosion on the descent into Albion Basin. After the rocky summit of Sunset Peak, the trail bursts into a celebration of color that is absolutely breathtaking. It's a powerful lesson that sometimes you must walk a different way to see everything in a whole new light.

"And there it is. The gentle guide. The climb was a challenge to conquer. The stream is an invitation to play. A call to lean, and dance your way home."

Part IV: Virtual Reality

A Path to Peace

This is one of the most stunning and heartfelt videos I've ever created. It is a slow, meditative journey designed to bring you a moment of peace.

Put on your VR headset, find a quiet space, and let's walk this path together. Let the scale of the mountains shrink the size of your worries and let the golden light of dawn fill you with hope.

Don't have a headset? Enjoy the Flat Screen version below!

Part V: Know Before You Go

Trip Planning

  • 📍 The Route: This is best done as a loop starting at Alta (Albion Basin) and ending at Brighton (bottom of Supreme lift), or vice versa.
  • 🚗 Two-Car System: Ideally, take two cars and park one at each endpoint. Otherwise, prepare for a long walk back along the road!
  • 🚌 Parking Warning: Parking in Albion Basin is extremely limited and fills up FAST. You must arrive very early to get a spot. If you can't, take the shuttle from the main Alta lot—it saves you the stress and the extra miles!

⚠️ High Altitude Alert

You are hiking above 10,000 feet. The air is thin! Drink twice as much water as you think you need, wear sunscreen (you burn faster up here), and watch the sky for afternoon thunderstorms which are common in summer.

A Lesson in Resilience

This hike is a complete journey. The climb to the pass is a challenge of will, the push to the summit is a test of resolve, and the descent through Albion Basin is a joyful celebration. It's a path that teaches lessons in resilience, surrender, and the beauty of taking a different way home.

"Can we be like the stream? Can we leave every place, and every soul, a little more beautiful for our having passed by?"

Sending Love and Positive Vibes,
