Cubic x and y Intercepts Dragon Gauntlet

The Story:
How do we prepare to face a beast of legend? We train. This lesson kicks off our journey into the complex world of polynomials by framing it as a series of trials to become an elite Dragon Rider. Students must learn to track these powerful beasts, distinguishing between a true "Breach" into our world and a deceptive "Phantom Signal." Welcome to the Gauntlet!

📜 Mission Briefing

  • 🎯 Mission Objective: Students will be able to identify the x- and y-intercepts of polynomials in factored form and recognize when a function has no real roots.

  • ⏳ Class Time: 1 x 85-minute period

  • 📚 Subject & Level: Secondary Math 3 / Algebra 2

  • 👻 The Adventure: Students are aspirants in the Dragon Rider Guild. To pass today's trial, they must prove they can track both young Quadratic Drakes and more mature Polynomial Dragons by identifying their "breach points" (real x-intercepts) and "phantom signals" (imaginary roots). Mastery is mandatory to advance.

🗺️ The Walkthrough

✨ Introduction: The Dragon Master's Decree (Approx. 10 mins) (Start with your themed motivational message about facing the challenge.) The Story: "Welcome, aspirants. I am the Dragon Master. To advance, you must learn to track dragons. You mastered the young Quadratic Drakes, but now you face Polynomial Dragons. You must learn to distinguish between a true Breach and a deceptive Phantom Signal. Mastery is your only option."

Before you head out into the field, you'll need your official guide to the creatures you'll be tracking. This video will introduce you to the two main species of the Aether-Wing Serpent and show you the distinct flight paths you'll be analyzing. Pay close attention, Cryptozoologists!

⚔️ Phase 1: The Entry Trial (Approx. 15 mins) The Story: "The Dragon Master will now demonstrate the signals. Pay attention." The Activity: The teacher goes over the starter problems, showing a Quadratic Breach, a Polynomial Breach, and a Phantom Signal, focusing only on identifying the intercepts.

⚔️ Phase 2: The 12 Chambers (Approx. 30 mins) The Story: "You will now walk the Gauntlet. Each of the 12 Chambers contains a signal. Analyze it, report your findings to the Chamber Guardian (the answer key), and if correct, you will earn a Runestone for your scorecard." The Activity: Students rotate through the 12 stations, solving the problem, checking with their team, and then checking the key to earn their sticker. Link to Starter and the 12 stations I copy these all on diffrent colors and have a key that is in the same color for each table.

👾 Phase 3 & 4: The Final Trials (Approx. 30 mins) The Story: "You have passed the Gauntlet. Now you face the final trials to prove your mastery and earn the rank of Dragon Rider." The Activities:

  1. The Simulator: Students work on the IDO Practice Challenge. (Note for teachers: To get access to this amazing resource, please contact darcistone@alpinedistrict.org! Also, please hit "submit" to start the quiz fresh, as it generates a new version on each attempt.)

  2. CASE FILES CLEARED, INVESTIGATOR!

Your excellent work investigating the 12 crime scenes has earned you a promotion. It's time to level up.

Your next challenge is to test your skills in the advanced Forensic Simulator to prove your pattern-recognition abilities.

  3. The Elder Dragon (Prerun): Students tackle the "Ultimate Boss" Prerun on IDO. (Note for teachers...)

  4. You've passed the simulation. Now you have one last trail before the top brass—the Math Department Heads—have a special case for you.
  5. The Final Verdict: Students complete the final challenge in Canvas to show ultimate victory.

  6. Listen up, Investigator.

This is your final trial. The "Beast" is trickier than anything you've faced—be on your toes, you'll need to find all the evidence, not just one piece.

Trust your training and don't give up. Keep working the case until you crack it and prove you are worthy. You are ready for this.

Now go show them what you've got.

🏆 Level Clear Screen: Dragon Rider Ranking

The Story: "The Gauntlet is complete. Report back to the Dragon Master for your ranking. A true rider always reflects on their trial." The Activity: On their Unit Check-off Schedule, students complete their Self-Reported Grade. Link for exit cards.

  • 10 (Dragon Master!): I can track any dragon, identifying every breach and phantom signal with confidence.

  • 8 (Dragon Rider!): I am a skilled tracker but might double-check my work on the most powerful beasts.

  • 6 (Aspirant!): I can track a dragon with my guild but need more practice to go solo.

  • 4 (Novice...): I'm still learning to read the signals and need more training in the Gauntlet.
