⚒️ Classroom Quests: The Serpent's Foraging Path

Synthetic Division with Cubic Polynomials
Synthetic Division with Cubic Polynomials

The hunt continues! After identifying the basic serpent species, our cryptozoologists must now learn to track the path of a more mature and complex creature: the Cubic Striker. This lesson focuses on mastering synthetic division by framing it as a magical spell used to track a mythical beast. Welcome to the next chapter of our polynomial adventure!

📜 Mission Briefing

  • 🎯 Mission Objective: Students will be able to use synthetic division to find the roots of a cubic polynomial, factor the resulting quadratic, and sketch a rough graph of the function's "Foraging Path."

  • ⏳ Class Time: 1 x 85-minute period

  • 📚 Subject & Level: Secondary Math 3 / Algebra 2

  • 👻 The Adventure: Students are "Cryptozoologists" on a hunt for the Aether-Wing Serpent. Their primary tool for tracking is a magical technique called the "Scryer's Rune" (synthetic division), which allows them to pinpoint the serpent's entry and exit points between our world and the Aetherial Plane.

🗺️ The Walkthrough

✨ Introduction: The Scryer's Rune (Approx. 15 mins)

(Use your Google Slides to guide this intro) Intro Google Slideshow

The Story: "Alright, Cryptozoologists. Today, we are tracking a mature Cubic Striker. Its 'Foraging Path' is more complex, and to track it, we need a special magical technique: the Scryer's Rune. This spell allows us to test a potential 'rift' location to see if the serpent truly passed through." The Instruction: Teach the process of synthetic division, introducing the Dragon's Magical Charting Rune (DMCR) memory device: Drop the lead, Multiply by the root, Combine the column, Repeat!

Intro Problems

⚔️ Main Activity: The Serpent Hunt (Approx. 40 mins)

The Story: "We have confirmed sightings of Cubic Strikers in four distinct regions. Your expedition teams will travel to each location. At each site, you must perform a full analysis to map the creature's complete foraging path." The Activity:

  • Set up the four stations using the problems from your Stations Document. (This is where you'll insert your new fun graphic!)

  • Teams rotate through the four "Sighting Locations." At each station, they must complete the full process: use the Scryer's Rune to find all three roots, identify the y-intercept, and sketch the N-shaped path.

  • They check their work against an answer key at each station before moving on.

  • Each of your 4 stations is a different "Sighting Location" with a unique, complete cubic polynomial problem.

  • At each station, teams must perform the entire Scryer's Rune protocol from start to finish:

    1. Use synthetic division (the DMCR method) to confirm the first root.

    2. Factor the remaining quadratic to find the other two roots.

    3. Find the y-intercept.

    4. Sketch the complete N-shaped "Foraging Path" on their whiteboards.

  • Once they have a complete analysis, they check it against the "Field Guide's Answer Key" at the station to see if they've successfully tracked the serpent.

👾 The Final Report (Approx. 20 mins)

Well Cryptozoologists on Conquering Using the Scryer's Rune to flawlessly track any serpent, find all its breach points, and map its complete path!

The Story: "Excellent work in the field. Your tracking data has been collected. Now, you must file your final report individually to prove you've mastered the Scryer's Rune and are ready for more dangerous missions." The Activity: Students work individually on the At-Home Quiz to Show Mastery. (Note for teachers: To get access to this amazing resource, please contact darcistone@alpinedistrict.org! Also, please hit "submit" to start the quiz fresh, as it generates a new version on each attempt.)

🏆 Level Clear Screen: Cryptozoologist's Self-Assessment

The Story: "The tracking data has been logged. It's time to evaluate your skills." The Activity: Students use their Printable Exit Ticket Card to complete their Self-Reported Grade.

  • 10 (Master Tracker!): I can use the Scryer's Rune to flawlessly track any serpent, find all its breach points, and map its complete path.

  • 8 (Experienced Hunter!): I'm confident in my tracking abilities but might need to double-check my rune-casting on more complex paths.

  • 6 (Tracker-in-Training!): I can track the serpent with my team but sometimes lose the trail when I'm on my own. I need more practice.

  • 4 (Loses the Trail...): The Scryer's Rune is still a bit mysterious to me, and I need more guidance to follow the serpent's path.
